Has anyone ever heard of a CAP mission that resulted in us getting credit for save(s) involving CAP members?
I thought about this about reading this http://www.ktva.com/ci_11768702 where AK Wing had a Beaver crash with 3 on board. None apparently injured. They called out with a satphone and had one picked up by a private aircraft and the rest by a Air NG helicopter.
In the later half of the 90s, I want to say 1997, a DCWG plane crashed during a mountain flying clinic. All survived but they were found by CAP aircrews after they began humping it out. This happened in West Virginia I believe.
Alabama Wing had a save credited on one of its own members in January 2006. One of ALWG's wing staff members was flying a private aircraft when it crashed. His passenger died, but he survived. ALWG ground teams found him and pulled him out. Pretty severe injuries, but last I head he was doing OK.
I've rescued 3 CAP members on two separate missions.
In the late 90s, two relatively new senior members went out friday evening to place a practice beacon on an old wreck site in the north GA mountains in preparation for a saturday training mission. Unfortunately, they parked at the wrong trailhead, so when they followed the directions and exited the trail, they ended up lost. Their cold gear was found in the car and overnight temps had dropped to 40s. We found them just before sundown the next day. (They did try turning the beacon on, but the batteries were dead.) They were both fine.
In 2005, we rescued 5 people from burning Learjet, and one passenger turned out to be a cadet. We didn't know it until he came over to thank us and said "I'm in CAP too".
Always a good feeling when you can help one of your own.
