At a recent gathering of CAP people (can't remember if it was a meeting or social gathering), I heard someone in authority mention that because we're saving so much money with the consolidated maintenance program, the CAP-USAF is considering dropping the maintenance rates on our planes. Has anyone else heard such rumors?
It's true. New rates have been published and the consolidated maintenance program has been given the credit.
It would be interesting to see what percentage of the savings could be attributed to the fact that we have so many new glass cockpit airplanes in the fleet vs. how much the consolidated maintenance program is savings us.
We should enjoy it while the warranty lasts. 1 G-1000 LCD = $20,000.

When the warranties are done, then its time to look out!!! Spark chasing and electric / electronic and auto pilot and flight director work are not just your average mom and pop FBO repair shop.
There will be specialists that are "gonna " look at that 2005 thru 2007 C182 at around 80 to 100 per hour shop rate at a bare minimum

I haven't seen the new reduced rates, but I'll bet that there is another partial cause for the reduction in rates: with the astronomical rises in fuel costs and the raised rates for a dry airplane, the amount of proficiency flying has taken a nose dive. The reduced rates likely reflect all of the reasons which have been postulated above and I would add my comment to the equation.

Seems to me that it would be smarter to keep the mainenance rates at the present level and enjoy the lower AvGas rates. If the maintenance rates were maintained, it would be easier to maintain out of warranty aircraft without raising the rates later. Even if it didn't cover everything, it would keep the rates from going through the roof, providing somewhat of a maintenance funding cushion. If we're smart, we can keep these aircraft from running us out of the flying business.
