Title: Missing Hiker SAR
Post by: Flying Pig on November 10, 2008, 03:38:32 AM
We have been on a SAR going on 9 days in Fresno County near Courtwright Resevoir for a lost hiker.  I believe CAP contributed by transporting a 2 dog teams down from Northern CA for the search.  Some rugged terrain, and 3 snow storms since he has gone missing.  The search continues.  There are 2 helicopters, an airplane and probably 60+ ground personnel from our Dept and via mutual aid from surrounding counties and states.

Wow, good luck.  Nine days is a long time to be lost

Actually a missing deer hunter, but still lost.  My county(which is nearby) has been providing a Class One SAR team for about the last three or four days.  Yes, CAP transported two dog teams down from far northern CA and flew them home two days later.  You haven't lived until you have a big Golden Retriever, his/her handler and two or three days stuff for both of them, all in a 206.  I have done it and the dogs are great: go to sleep and sleep for most of the flight.  Interesting to be flying along and have a wet nose hit your elbow without any advanced notice.  Would do it any time.

After 2 weeks with absolutely nothing to go on, the command decision was made to have the search called off.

Well, after two weeks, the chances are pretty slim (I'd think), unless the guy has great survival skills and doesn't want to be found. I fear for the worst of this missing person. My prayers go out to him and his loved ones, and an honorable salute to you gentlemen who made the long haul of the attempted rescue.

I know how demoralizing a long fruitless search can be.  Good work to all involved and I'll add my prayers for the missing the hiker.
