Title: ELT with standard D-Cells!
Post by: JoeTomasone on November 06, 2008, 12:47:23 AM

Had a non-distress UDF mission this morning (earrrrly this morning...) and upon silencing it went to get the date off the battery only to find that this unit takes standard D Cells.   That was a first for me (and the IC).

Anyone seen any like this?  According to the mechanic, they are becoming more commonplace.

I had one of those a couple of months ago in a helicopter.

My Three year old(121.5) Ameri-king is that way.  The manual states you have to use Duracell part number #### batteries with an expiration date in the future.  HTe regular off the shelf batteries are the proper ones.  I guess it was a real moneymaker in the old days to shrink wrap D cells then sell em for $$$ as the only approved battery.

We've got practice beacons that use both C and AA's, of course those aren't a safety issue when the bunny dies.

Besides, and ELT is like a motorcycle helmet - you only need it when you expect to crash.

D-Cell's I can see we have some at Group 8 HQ and one here at the St Petersburg EOC Building that no joke read as follows

*USES FOUR C SIZE BATTERIES* opened it up yep it looks like the stick of C's that go in to a C Cell Maglite

My ELT uses D-Cells. Quite common.
