Title: CAP NHQ employees will no longer utilize the cap.gov e-mail address
Post by: Capt Rivera on August 27, 2008, 04:58:53 PM
QuoteEffective September 1st CAP National Headquarters employees will no longer utilize the cap.gov e-mail address. All National Headquarters addresses follow the {first initial + last name}@capnhq.gov format and may be reached this way already. After September 1st any e-mail sent to NHQ personnel via cap.gov addresses will no longer reach us so it is important that you keep the new format in mind in the weeks ahead. If you do not receive a timely reply to your e-mails in the near future you please check the address you used. Please take a few moments now to check your computer's e-mail address book and change the National Headquarters' addresses.

We apologize for the inconvenience of this change but it must be done to accommodate modifications that are occurring in the way cap.gov addresses are managed. Thank you for your patience.

Did anyone understand that? I read it a few times and it lost me. Is it TRYING to say that if someones email address used to be, ilikeplanes@cap.gov that it will now be john.doe@capnhq.gov ?

I wonder if this has anything to do with making your.name@cap.gov available to general membership - similar to what was discussed in this thread:

Doubtful, probably more like separating corporate staff v.s corporate officer emails.

An easy and free way NHQ could do it is with Google.

http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/org/index.html (http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/org/index.html)

We would qualify for the education edition which gets rid of ads. [might do more]

Anyway... it's free... requires very little setup and would give each CAP member a free @capnhq.gov email address with about 7 gigs of storage or free.

Now with more investigation there could be drawbacks, but on the surface I'm not seeing them.... [Since it's not my call, I won't investigate past the surface at this time...] Anyone know more/have experience?

It's already been done by certain parts of CAP, including WIWG and (soon) my squadron.  Seems to be working fine with WIWG (john.doe@wiwg.cap.gov), so why not for all of CAP?

Could be something with the .gov domain being "owned" by someone who won't give you rights to let google use it.

Don't think that's the case at all.  As I said, I've conversed with the WIWG webmaster (a former member of CAPTalk) about it, and they use the GoogleApps service for their webmail.  Even though their website is www.wiwgcap.org, they still have the @wiwg.cap.gov available for e-mail, and that's what GoogleApps is set up for with them.

Interesting... I'm not against it, in fact my squadron emails with a .org are Google Apps accounts.  One thing that I heard from a full bird AF Col. recently was, just because they do it, doesn't mean that it should be done.

I can't really say whether it is correct or not, just that the possibility exists that there are additional issues with using Google with a .gov account.  I get pretty sketchy about sending some emails when I know they are being sniffed for content.
