Title: Long Line Rescue technique
Post by: Flying Pig on July 15, 2008, 06:45:03 PM
Here is one of our many extraction techniques used in SAR.  Although I have had CAP IC's tell me that helicopters aren't particularly useful in SAR operations.

It allows us to fly in a deputy to a remote location where the helicopter may not be able to set down.  We can load the injured person, or maybe even an uninjured person who can't climb out, and fly them to safety or to where medical assistance is waiting.  This may be exactly what we would do, and any other LE agencies would do  in the case of a CAP ground or Air team locating a crash site with live/injured victims.  In many areas, it may take hours or even days to carry a victim out or to where someone can fly them out.  We have done it MANY times with dead bodies.  The only difference is that with a body, the deputy doesn't fly with them.  It can be risky, and strapping a live person to dead person doesn't serve much purpose.

Arent you a nurse or a Paramedic? You should look around.  Many Depts have volunteer medics as part of their aircrews.

I know your in TN but who knows.

For example, San Bernardino County Sheriff does it in CA.  I dont know much about TN but the opportunities are there.

I have recommendations as to the helicopter pilot and the guy on the skid... although it wouldn't be with their approvals, of course... and it would have to be over their wives dead bodies.

With regards; ED OBRIEN

In the army side of things we call it a spur ride when a person straps them self to the outside of an aircraft and rides that way.  I have seen the guys come back from it, nearly passed out, but they said it was fun.  I am a helicopter guy but I dont think CAP really has a use from them other than training with the local authorities on how to handle the ground side of things

Haha I could find that video on the web.  That was acually my unit in Iraq.  It is missed labeled but it was us.  That was when they picked up the kiowa poilot.  That crew went on leave and then came back to have to do the same thing with some of our own aircrew.  I know we do it on the Apache.  On 58s I would asume they could hide in the back.
