Title: L-per rattle??
Post by: capchiro on June 14, 2008, 03:50:49 AM
While checking out our new L-per, I notice that when shaken (gently) of course, there is a rattle, like something loose on the inside.  I am not going to break the factory seals to check it out, but is there anyway this is normal??  This unit also continues to show fail when calibrated.  There are also what looks like a couple of very small stress cracks in the case, basically in the areas where the case screws are screwed in.   The serial number is 30154 and even though we have had it for a while it has been properly stored and never used.  Any thoughts anyone can share??  Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't sweat the seals, since you'll have to break them the first time you have to change the batteries. Lay it face down, and remove the cover screws and cover. Then gently turn it over and see what falls out.

Break the seals and open it up. L-Tronics doesn't get real excited about the seals.
Sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere.

The cracks in the case sound like somebody got a little carried away tightening the screws after changing the battery.
It's a pretty common problem along with stripped threads.

Another thought on the screws. I replaced the original, need-a-screwdriver, ones with some knurled screws I got at Home Depot. They are nylon, and need trimmed to the proper length. Three advantages - won't strip the threads in the case, can't overtighten them and crack anything, and you don't need a screwdriver to change the batteries.

L-Tronics even has replacement screws that have big plastic knobs on them for that very reason.

Murphy's Law dictates that a screwdiver will not be available when you need to change the battery. ;)

Home Depot is cheaper, and closer.
