Title: Picture
Post by: Flying Pig on March 21, 2008, 11:50:42 PM
I think you can pretty much take any military picture and attach a verse from the book of Revelation and it will turn out cool.

I'm not against religion, indeed the verse is cool it matches real well with the picture at the same time it would have looked cool without it either way.

Do you know much about the pic? Like why do we see the fog or why we see numbers in white off to the left a bit.. there doesn't seem to be a recognizable horizon or the ship itself.

It looks like the plane is on one of the waist cats, and the fog is actually a steam cloud from the other waist cat having just fired. The ship appears to be the USS Harry S Truman, CVN-75. The number is on the side of the island (superstructure), but it looks low and too small for the regular number..

never heard of "waist cats" is this the same thing as a catapult? So the #75 is on a rock/super structure? So that part of the picture must be edited for effect??

Waist cats is short for waist catapults, the catapults near the middle of the ship, hence, waist.

Yes a waist cat is the same thing as a catapult. It is a catapult found about midships, hence waist.

The picture is taken on an aircraft carrier, there shouldn't be any rocks within miles. The superstructure or as commonly known as the island is the part of the ship that is above the flight deck on the starboard (right for you land lubbers) side of the ship.

The number is painted on couple parts of the superstructure, I've been looking through some of my pictures to see if I have any examples, but it's late, and I have to get ready for work, I'll look better this weekend.

That class of carrier has four catapults - in the bow area, and two on the angle deck (waist cats).

The 75 appears to be on the superstructure. No editing noticed. I haven't seen any other pix of the boat, so I can't tell exactly what's going on with the paint job.

OK, my mistake - it's on a bow cat. I have a link, but it's not working right. Will post later.

I learned all I needed to know about the Navy from JAG.  Great show!

I see this is going to turn into a debate about Photoshopping and religion.

There wasn't any photoshop regarding the number.  Its on the forward facing portion of the "Island".  Ive also been in the Truman a few times and I can vouch for the fact that its really there.

My pic, even more evident than the one above. Note the small number on the front of the island, and the much larger, lighted number on the side.

Interesting to see a Blue Angel on a carrier.  I guess they need to requal periodically.  As if they're not busy enough.  :)  Great pic!

Nope, that was a one time good deal, and the first time in the history of the unit that a team plane had landed on a carrier.

no debate about religion/photoshopping.

someone thought it was a rock or something (or I did) so I assumed it was photoshopped obviously incorrect...  I forgot about the island on the ship but the steam seemed to obscure that fact a bit.

As far as the verse quote YMMV I still think it is great with the pic/verse as they match but the verse could also have been left off as well... the effects are still outstanding whoever the photographer was.
