Post by: JC004 on March 19, 2008, 02:17:33 PM
Google is doing this for a lot of sites now, but I just noticed it for cap.gov:

Is it just me or is anyone else really tired of the ubiquitous broiler plate that EVERY PAO in CAP uses?  It's on there for everything from announcements of meeting nights to obituaries.

QuoteIt performs 95% of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counterdrug missions. It's great the first 74 times you see it - then it's just tiresome.  I wish NHQ would use something else from time-to-time.  It's like listening to the same commercial on A&E three times in a row during every break during a three hour movie. ;D

Remember, its tiresome for YOU because you're a member and you've seen it 74 (or, in my case, 7400) times.   Joe Blow, the assistant chief local editor for Podunk, Idaho says "What the hell is a Civil Air Patrol?" when this email lands in his inbox.  That is who that sort of boilerplate is directed at.

EVERY big organization that issues releases and such does this kind of a "snapshot summary" of the organization.  EVERY.

http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/23709.wss (well, IBM says "Look at our website, we're tired of repeating ourselves.."<GRIN>)

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2008/mar08/03-19RCHyperVPR.mspx
"Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq "MSFT") is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential."  How many folks in Redmond are like "yeah, yeah, 1975, we get it!"?  Probably very few.

http://www.ford.com/about-ford/news-announcements/press-releases/press-releases-detail/pr-ford-launches-26lsquowarriors-in-27920
"Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., manufactures or distributes automobiles in 200 markets across six continents. With more than 245,000 employees and more than 100 plants worldwide, the company's core and affiliated automotive brands include Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercury, Volvo and Mazda. The company provides financial services through Ford Motor Credit Company. For more information regarding Ford's breast cancer awareness initiatives, visit www.fordcares.com."

http://www.redcross.org/pressrelease/0,1077,0_314_7578,00.html
"The American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters at home and abroad, collects and distributes nearly half of the nation's blood supply, teaches lifesaving skills, and supports military members and families. The American Red Cross, a charity and not a government agency, depends on voluntary contributions of time, money and blood to perform its humanitarian mission."

Now, should we perhaps have a "better" one of these?  Or maybe have 2-3 that we switch up?

I agree with NIN...at least they've made SOME effort at a consistent message (note: rare, but this is indeed the exception).

Usually the boilerplate is stuck on the end of the release after the really newsworthy stuff.

enter in your favorite google search box:

site:cap.gov cadet programs

... google search will parse only that site, in this case, 'cap.gov'.

(or www.cap.gov, same thing.)

Want to track that Vanguard order being shipped FedUp? Put in the tracking # directly.

Used to be you could put in a tail # and it would take you to the FAA registry, they yanked it..

Lots of things you can do in the search box..

personally, I like commercial flight information on my cell phone by text messaging Google.  I also use Google Local and weather by text message, as well as 1-800-GOOG-411.

Google is evil   >:D   They are trying to take over your personal and private life.  If anyone wants to join me to burn down Google, I would be happy to pay your travel expenses.

COLGAN.....how is working for the evil Google going these days?  Did you get paid yet??  Or did Google just demand that your paycheck be put right back into their "mandatory employee stock buy option program"?  You know, the one where you actually never see any of the $$ they owe you!   :'(

IIRC this isn't about trivial google employment. This is about cap.gov being on google.com's search.  Keep up the good work mikey I'm surprised nobody at your echelon nailed you like they did to me recently :).

^ Yes, just read.  Sorry you are having difficulties.  From reading what you posted, I see nothing wrong with any of it.
