Title: Maryland Wing Band
Post by: Michael on January 19, 2008, 09:11:56 PM
I read about a band in Maryland Wing very recently and was wondering if they are active.

I got to attend the MER conference last summer while I was back east.  They played there.  Pretty good, actually.  They wear the old USAAF-style uniforms.

The MDWG Band actually has it's own squadron, Chesapeake Bay Senior Squadron (MER-MD-096).  They don't tend to get involved in many CAP activities other than when they are asked to perform.  They are good though.  I've seen them countless times at squadron, wing, region, and national events.

Does anyone have any pictures? I'm kind of curious to see a CAP band.

Anyone know if they have any trombone openings?

I know a potential member.

I believe the band is pretty much made up of the members of the Chesapeake Senior Squadron (http://mdcap.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=unit.view&unitID=6).  There's a contact on the web page.  Your friend could probably see about joining the band but also joining another squadron if they are a cadet.  What area does this person live in?

The MDWG band performed at a few of the MDDF Annual Musters.  They are pretty good.

Capt Crockett, or 1st Lt Wisemen, I have something that I would like to present to the commander of the band on behalf of the MDDF.  How can I get in contact with them.  It is an award for their participation in our Muster.

I'd say email the contact on this page (http://mdcap.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=unit.view&unitID=6) and see if they can put you in contact with the person in charge of the band.  I don't pesonally know anyone in the band.

Whatever happened to the Military Music Academy they had out there a few summers ago.....it went for a few years and I think was named an NCSA and then fell off the face of the earth???

My unit sent a couple cadet who had a great time. I would love to see it make a come back.

The contact info on the page Lt Wiseman referenced above is for Capt Goolsby, who is the deputy director of the band.  He is a good point of contact, and is actually who I spoke with when I booked them for my squadron's banquet a few years ago.

As for the NMMA, it basically fell apart due to logistical issues.

I will follow up with that contact, but does anyone know about how many gigs they have per year?

When I was the MDWG PAO, I posted a news release about the MDWG Band that was picked up by the media because the Vice President was in the audience when they performed at a Korean War ceremony. You can read the story and see pictures on the MDWG web site at http://mdcap.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=article.display&articleid=228.
