Disclaimer: This is not intended as a policy statement, just an observation and opinion.
I've seen a lot of use of the Exclamation point message icon lately, and it just seems like it doesn't belong on some posts in my opinion. I could change 'em if I really wanted to, but instead I figured I'd make a topic on message icons and their use instead... with the icon in question thrown in for effect ;D.
What is the problem? Well... I've always considered the Exclamation point icon as more of an Attention marker like those stickers on your lawn mower or snow blower that tells you not to stick your hand or limbs in there. Thus this icon should be used only to for really important "Read This Post" topics.
When I've got a question I'll sometimes use the Question mark icon for the topic. I'll also sometimes use the Thumb up or Thumb down icons as a means to express an opinion when replying to a topic. The lamp icon to me says "I have an idea." Really... all the message icons other than than standard one serve to draw attention to the topic/post, so I think they should be used with some discretion.
Agree. :)
Props for proper use of the Thumb Up. ;D
Wow, I had no idea that you could do that. Awesome.
Here's an idea:
