Title: Do you know your ribbons?
Post by: RiverAux on October 21, 2007, 11:51:33 PM
With all the talk of ribbons on here, I'm just wondering how many people are like me in that I probably couldn't tell you what half the ribbons I have earned are if you asked me to point them out to you on my rack (assuming I was wearing all of them).  Now, I'm just asking about your CAP ribbons and not any military ribbons that you've earned and carried over onto your CAP uniform.

I can actually tell you all of them if I'm looking at them. Now if I'm not wearing them, and you ask me what I have, I might miss a couple.

I could. No problem.

In my early days of being Deputy Commander for Cadets about once per quarter I would conduct the Sq. uniform inspection.  I would ask the cadets to tell me their ribbon names and why they were awarded.  If they couldnt, they were not allowed to wear their ribbons until they could.  Usually, I would just point to a ribbon like a Red Service, or Encampment, Unit Citation and ask what it was.  I was actually surprised to see how many didnt know.

Yeah Yeah I know....your not going to find that in the cadet programs guide anywhere and I probably damaged some kids self esteem....but after  one time everyone knew them.

I take great pride in what I've done in CAP, and am gracious that I've been rewarded with something to show what I've done. Plus I only have six ribbons, so it wouldn't be hard!!  ;D

In order based on precedence?

I require any cadets coming before a promotion board to know what the name of the achievement is and something about the person it's named for. Amazing the answers you get.

I might know them better, but only wear blues at the Wing Conference and maybe 1 other time a year so unless I go drool over my ribbon rack in a darkened room, hardly ever see them.

I can name all of mine.  I even know the proper direction to wear my membership and leadership ribbons, contrary to a few people and pictures of people that I've seen...

I can definitely. I even know about 90% of the old ones. There are a few I am vague on.

Yes, I can.  I've had to recite them to visitors at the squadron who didn't know what all the fabric was about.    ;D

And just a couple of weeks ago 2 or 3 NCOs in my squadron walked up to me and challenged me to recite the names of all my ribbons in order.  I did.

Yes I can name my ribbons since they represent most of my CAP resume.

WIWAC, We would do uniform inspections every meeting, twice a month those meetings were blues.  Part of that inspection was ribbon order.  So your darn tootin' I could and can still name every ribbon CAP has by color, name, and even tell you if it isn't where it is supposed to be...

So not only do I know my own, but I know yours as well.

Well, it looks like I am in the minority of active CAPTalk members on this issue, but then again we all know that CAPTalkers are among the best and brightest in CAP and know uniform and other regulation requirements better than the average CAP guy or gal.   ;)

So, to slightly change the topic:  Since most CAPTalk folks know their ribbons pretty darn well, do you think that the average senior member in your squadron knows them as well as you do?

Considering most of them wear golf shirts, I would doubt it.

I definitely can.  I have two cadets (one a C/1st Lt and one C/CMSgt) and they of course have a load of ribbons.  Since I'm the one that orders all ribbons for our family on Hock Shop (and pays for them), I also make sure the ribbons are still in shape on the rack.

I can name all of mine, but I don't know about the others. One SM who only has one ribbon can obviously name them all, but another that has several ribbons I know cannot name them all, he tried once and failed. Beyond the three of us, none of the SM in my squadron even wear uniforms, let alone ribbons.

Yes I can name all mine, as well as all the cadet ribbons up to C/Master Sgt.
-Senior cadet in the unit at the moment.

As far as ones I dont have or any other cadet type ribbons, I doubt it.

I can name CAP ribbons with 99.9% accruacy (unless you throw in some of the really old WWII service ribbons) and I can usually identify about 80% of all DoD ribbons.

;D
