Title: BG Courter dissed by AF Magazine
Post by: RiverAux on September 09, 2007, 03:26:27 AM
Okay, so the Sept. issue of Air Force Magazine http://www.afa.org/magazine/sept2007/0907photo.pdf (http://www.afa.org/magazine/sept2007/0907photo.pdf)has a photochart of Air Force leadership and while they were kind enough to include CAP's Acting National Commander on it, they left off her rank.  Now, I'm not wanting to start the whole real vs CAP rank argument again, but the AF should at least acknowledge CAP rank since they've authorized it and they should have used her proper CAP rank just as they did with all the other officers.  Note that the recent AF Times historical article on CAP used CAP ranks for several individuals.

I doubt they meant any malace by it, either an omission, or they just didn't want her to seem like she was a real Brig Gen.

At least we're labeled under "Auxiliary", not "Red Headed Stepchild that we give money to"

On a side note, I woulda figured they'd get a better picture of Col Hodgkins then, what looks like, his MySpace picture

(I don't know if he really has one, just saying, it's of that quality)

Isn't that the Air Force Association Magazine?  At least we got in there.  TP must be spinning in circles that he was not put in.  I guess the AF supplied the info, so they are backing his removal by not sending his info??

It's Brig Gen, not BG

It was nice to have been included on the chart to begin with.  And at least she's in CAP uniform (USAF-style) and you can clearly see the star on her shoulders and in the background.

Thanks for reminding me that posts to CAPTalk are considered official CAP communications and I apologize for not follwing CAP regulations.
Title: AFA Annual Almanac - USAF Leadership Photos

Did anyone see the September issue of "Air Force," the Air Force Association's magazine? They had a good photo spread on Air Force Leadership. Running down all the major commands the last one was "Auxiliary"

You can see the whole thing here:

I wrote a letter to the editor regarding one of their articles, which was published, but my rank was deleted.

I should have used "Maj, USAR, Ret." but that would have defeated the point that I was writing on an aerospace issue.

But...

I thought the grades didn't matter and it was all about the MISSION?

Now I'm >really< confused.

Agreed.  Can't have it both ways.  I do however think grade should start mattering, but that's another topic which has been beaten to death and beyond recognition. ;D

Looking at it differently, CAP officers aren't commissioned (we all have acknowledged that) and including rank would give the impression Brig Gen Courter is.  Would also have probably generated "outrage" on the part of AFA who might have taken an opposite view.

The diagram was nicely done, and did include CAP.  That's the good part in my opinion.

My thanks to the Air Force Association for acknowledging CAP and including us.  I choose to see the glass half full, not half empty.  ;)

Don't forget the AF approves the General Officers in CAP, thus giving their status as CAP Officers above the rest of us.  Simply put, the AF grants "Generalships" to those CAP Officers they deem worthy.

I have to agree with Ricochet in regards to the inclusion and they way the included CAP at the same level as a majcom.

My apologies to the list for recreating this topic, didn't catch the one started on the 8th!

Im not sure if it was a diss. On one hand I think it was generous of AFA to include us. But on the other, it would have been nice to mention her Generalship. (even if it said " Brig Gen, CAP " )

As an aside, Im not a AFA member, but is there any way I can grab a copy of this issue in print?

Speaking of which, what does AFA membership cost, are CAP members eligible, and what are the benefits?  (hmm... maybe this is off topic enough to warrant its own thread... mods?   ;D ;)  )

are CAP members eligible,

IIRC, the AFA recently changed it's tax exempt status, which changed its eligibility criteria for membership.  So, again, IIRC, anyone can be an AFA member now.

Has anybody addressed this to the editor of Air Force magazine?  I would have, but I did not want to appear to be engaging in personal aggrandizement.

If nobody else wants to, I will write the editor on the basis of my National Commander's rank being deleted as well as my own.

Obviously, it would have to include the CAP after the rank.  I would certainly not suggest that she just be listed as Brig Gen.

So, is the jury still out on this or did we reach a verdict?
