Capt. Maria H. Giles
Deland Composite Squadron
Florida Wing
Maria H. (Mary) Giles, 70, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at home, cradled in the arms of her devoted husband. Her journey began in an unexpected place—Havana, Cuba, where she was born to Diego and Maria Aguila Fernandez while her parents were visiting family. That spirit of spontaneity and adventure would follow her throughout her life.
Mary was a proud graduate of Miami High, Class of 1973, and went on to earn her Associate's Degree in Paramedic Sciences from Keiser University. She dedicated her life to service, beginning as a dispatcher for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Her passion and strength led her to break barriers, rising through the ranks to become a firefighter—a role she embraced with courage and compassion. Mary retired after 35 years of distinguished service as a Fire Captain and Paramedic at Miami International Airport. She also gave her time and heart to the Civil Air Patrol, volunteering as a Captain and mentor to others.
In November 2000, she married the love of her life, Arthur (Art) Giles. Together, they built a life full of adventure—traveling, snow skiing, Scuba Diving, flying, and embracing every joy life had to offer. Their love was a partnership grounded in laughter, respect, and unwavering support.
Mary's greatest pride, beyond her career and achievements, was her family. She is survived by her beloved husband, Arthur, and her three children: Stephen Whitehurst, Jill Whitehurst, and Eric Whitehurst. Her legacy lives on in them—in their strength, kindness, and resilience.
