Jay was born on October 31, 1956, to Robert and Margaret Burrell. He passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025.

Jay attended Lane Tech HS, participating in ROTC, football and swim teams, and played saxophone in various school productions. Upon graduation from Lane, he enlisted in the Air Force which included being stationed in Germany. When he returned home, he attended college, first at Wright Junior College in Chicago, then transferring to Northeastern Illinois University, where he earned a BA in psychology, followed by an MBA from Loyola University of Chicago and an Executive Certificate through the MIT Sloan School of Management. In addition to working in Operations, most recently as COO and VP at Tri Industries, Jay also taught business classes at Concordia University in Kenosha.

Jay was an active participant in Civil Air Patrol for over 30 years, reaching the rank of Colonel and most recently serving as Inspector General at the national level.

Jay was an avid reader, enjoyed discussing music and history, traveling, racing his Porsche, and studying and teaching martial arts, holding a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

He loved his family immensely. Jay was the beloved husband of Dr. Barbara Burrell of 43 years; loving father of Christopher (Lisa Ogoshi) and Jonathan (Dr. Andriana Tompary) Burrell; cherished grandfather of Alice; and dear brother of Lisa (Michael) Sexton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
