Title: Whee! Going To Pacific Region Staff College
Post by: ProdigalJim on January 28, 2016, 01:03:38 AM
My work schedule already looks ugly for the whole year so I knew my only real shot was to go to Pacific Region Staff College. I got all the confirmations finalized today and I'm sending back the forms. From what everyone says here, the RSC at Nellis is really THE RSC to attend, so I'm glad it's working out that way. Looks like a really great time!

You'll have a great time there! It's being held a little later in the year this year ( it's usually held around March/April ) so the weather will be a little warmer. But that's a small trade-off for the caliber of training offered at the school. Plus it's Vegas, which isn't a bad thing either. :-)

Trust me... you won't be seeing much of Sin City the week of RSC, except from a distance! Unless you manage to wangle a couple of days before or after the course! You'll be pretty busy attending classes and presentations and working with your seminar on your capstone project. There will be a couple of days where you'll take tours of Red Flag, the Threat Training Facility (aka the 'Petting Zoo') and the Thunderbirds hangar, depending if they are available. The BOQs at Nellis are quite comfortable; most students stay at the quarters near the BX complex, within walking distance of the BQ. Others may be assigned quarters near the dining hall and officers' club. ('Robin's Roost' - named after the legendary Brig Gen Olds - is the world-infamous O-club bar.) Depending on the seminar's workload you might be able to go outside the wire and visit a casino for a couple of hours, but there's no guarantee.

Thanks for the gouge. I wasn't figuring on casinos...just as well, I'm a lousy poker player.

How much of the school is tours and the like versus seminars and assignments? What was the one thing you wished you'd brought with you that you didn't bring and that wasn't on the list?

In total the tours only take up a maybe a half of a day. They are staggered throughout the week, depending on the schedule. The rest of your time is split between classroom lecture, seminar working activities and whatever evening time is required to complete your seminar project.

The required items list is pretty complete. The one thing that is usually sought after is a tablet or laptop to assist in the 'homework'.

Be aware that the military support authorization for those staying on base may get funny looks form the cashiers at the BX. Seems to me there's a failure to communicate... :D

Not a bias bone in my body...but...the PCR is the best when it comes to conducting their Region Staff Colleges (the RSC and the CCRSC).  We take Professional Development seriously :)
