Title: Ranger School/WWII Weekend
Post by: Saffrin on April 21, 2015, 08:35:24 PM
Hey!
I'm Cadet Senior Airman Schaeffer, from Squadron 811. We host the annual WWII Weekend in CAP. I was wondering
if anyone was going to it this year? Or if anyone is going to Hawk Mountain Ranger School? I'll be at both, so see ya
there!

Respectfully,
C/SrA Schaeffer
Sqd. 811

Generally speaking this should likely be two separate questions.  Especially since the excessive conversation that one will likely produce would be a shame to pollute the other.

WWII Weekend is an awesome immersion into WWII aviation and general militaria via hundreds of very authentic re-enactors (including some CAP ones)  I would encourage anyone that has even the slighted interest in this time period to attend.  Sadly as time marches on more and more of the first hand experiences are becoming "...I know a guy who knew a guy...", and much of the physical history items are become more and more limited to museum pieces.   Not here-almost everything there is working moving, flying driving functional etc.

Quote5, 6, and 7 June 2015, the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum hosted its 25rd annual World War II Weekend. Civil Air Patrol participated in its usual capacity, aiding with parking, flight line, and crowd control. Thank you to all the units that volunteered their time this year!  We are proud to have had hosted squadrons from both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, in addition to the New York members participating as reenactors.

For squadrons interested in participating or any Cadets interested in Staffing in the 2015 World War II Weekend, please contact us for more information.

Sure there is some work involved, but the cadet experience is also very good, sometimes better than the paying customer.  BITD I was a member of this squadron and other than the MAAM folks we were pretty much the only organization supporting them.  We did it all, parking, flight line, we did overnight security, our personnel were the only medical personnel available on site for the first few years.

One year ('94) I remember that a few army SF and Airborne guys came up and jumped round chutes out of a DC-3 in commemoration of D-Day... the winds blew them all over the airport (except the DZ), CAP personnel (driving in WWII military jeeps) were the ones that drove all over the airport property to pick them up (kind of ironic since that's pretty much what happened back then too, except for the CAP part)

These simple and innocent questions are so loaded with potential. I'm calling 21 pages and then a lock. :)

And no, I won't be at either.

I think the next time my squadron sends anyone to Hawk, I'm going to try to be along for the ride, if only because of captalk.

regardless of the specific activity- I always encourage people reserve judgement until they can apply first hand experience to the mix

I base my judgment on the product, which has been less that stellar for HMRS in my experience.
