Title: Combat air controllers: Skydiving with dirt bikes and guns
Post by: Eclipse on June 21, 2014, 04:00:46 PM
So yeah, this looks to be about the coolest thing ever (other then the getting shot at and being ahead of
the full force, and maybe lost in the desert, etc...)

The CCTs and PJs have the longest training and highest attrition rates in the SOF world.

I shouldn't wonder, given that they have to, by the nature of their jobs, drop into hornets' nests and pull downed aircrew out/call in airstrikes.

I remember reading that the UK Special Air Service has a 90% washout rate.

I had a kid show up to the DZ couple years back (my first full year as an instructor). He was an A1C or SrA newly assigned to Hanscom AFB (IIRC, a surgical technician or something medical). He had spent an entire year plus in the PJ pipeline (indoc, HALO, etc) and gotten washed out in the last week for... an integrity violation.  (IIRC, he had a beer while he was less than 21..)

(I signed off his USPA A-license application based on the card the HALO school instructors had wrongly filled out and a check-dive. They did the typical military "There are 10 lines that require a signature and date, so I will draw a diagonal line across all 10 and sign once" but the USPA stopped allowing that.. what a pain to transcribe all that )

That CNN piece is just stupid.

Yup, otherwise about as stupid as the Useless Today GA crash piece.
