Title: Change in Ham radio license requirements
Post by: capchiro on March 28, 2007, 01:22:58 PM
As of February 23, 2007, the FCC dropped the code requirement for the General and Extra Class license.  I have heard that the written examination may be rewritten in July and will then be harder to pass.  Anybody heard anything along those lines?

Don't know if it's true, but I would hope they do.  Dropping code may bring in more people into ham radio, but I think it's wise to balance it out on the other end.  Keep the Extra class something to really strive for, rather than dumbing it down like a B-CUT.

I have seriously considered upgrading, but I may wait for the more challenging question pools to come out.

I had heard of the code requirement but this is the first I've heard about beefing up the writtens.  Sounds fine to me.  Though, I doubt I'll ever change license class from Technician regardless of requirements/tests/etc.

The question pools are periodically changed.  Here is the schedule:

Technician pool was updated last year. The next update will be effective 6/30/2010.

General pool new update will be effective 7/1/07 and will run through 6/30/2011.

Extra pool new update will take effect 7/1/2008.

I have heard nothing about making the tests harder.  I am a volunteer examiner accredited with the ARRL and W5YI-VEC's.

I would say that if you looked like Chewbacca, we'd have to have a serious talk about grooming standards....corporate uniform or not LOL

Does that mean the "Chewbacca Defense" is no longer allowed?

When did Mayhew Die?

Not that I know of... last I heard he's now a naturalized U.S. citizen living in the picturesque hamlet of Granbury, Texas.
