Title: Respect and male/female commander
Post by: DMinick on September 10, 2013, 01:01:20 AM
I was just curious about this topic. Do you find that male commanders get more respect and support than female commanders do? I have only had a female commander so I don't know. I know what I see with ours and how things are different when at wing events. I was just curious!

I have seen both sides of both genders, and barring sexist goobers, generally the level of respect is based on bearing, knowledge, and performance.

You must have missed our previous National Commander, Major General Amy Courter. She was just exceptional. Several of the female Wing Commanders over the years have been excellent.

No Commander has been perfect. Do your best, honesty and good character always stands out.  8)

As with any person, in any role, anywhere.

I did.  But it mostly had to do with the size of my biceps and massive chest.  My lats were rather impressive as well.

I know that all commanders should have the respect I just wondered in this particular group if it was worse or better being that it's a military auxiliary group. I did miss the previous Nat'l commander. I have only been a member for about 18 months now. I just noticed that a majority of the commanders here in our wing anyway are male and they seem to get more respect than the few females do. I only know our commander well and wasn't sure if it was just a male/female thing or if it was more of a person to person thing. Thanks!!!

Well, the majority of members are male, so that's to be expected.

In my experience it's been a person-to-person thing that is sometimes interpreted as a male/female thing.  I've met a number of
"nice" female commanders who bump heads or aren't respected because they rose to their jobs based on circumstance and not ability
(as many male CC's do), and aren't willing to make the hard choices they should because they don't want to hurt people's feelings.

That or "cadet moms" who turn units into rec centers and picnics.  They spend their time "shepherding", which has its place, but ignore
much of the program, and then find themselves at a disadvantage when they are in a room full of more experience make commanders,
some of whom might be sexist goobers on top of everything else.

I've also worked with a number of very competent female commanders and staff who never allowed it to be questioned who was in
charge, and didn't let feelings get in the way of leading.
