Post by: CAPAPRN on June 19, 2013, 02:58:59 AM
Col Hayden has announced the selection of Major Ken Chapman as CT Wing Commander. The following is a short bio provided by the Major:

Major Ken Chapman began his Civil Air Patrol career as a cadet in 1983.  Chapman progressed through the cadet program for 5 years, earning the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel.  Chapman's other cadet accomplishments included earning a flight scholarship to achieve the powered solo rating and becoming the cadet squadron commander for Atlanta Composite Squadron 2 at Fort Gillem, Georgia.

Chapman's tenure as a Civil Air Patrol cadet was followed by an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point and 8 years of active service as an officer in the US Army.  Chapman's Army service also included a tour of duty as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. His military education included the Officer Basic Course, the Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms & Services Staff School, Airborne School, Air Assault School and Jumpmaster School.
Chapman returned to Civil Air Patrol in 2007 as a senior member in the 399th Composite Squadron of Connecticut Wing.  While at the 399th Composite Squadron, Chapman held numerous staff positions to include the Deputy Commander of Cadets (DCC).  As the DCC, Chapman led the squadron to earn the 2009 Connecticut Wing Squadron of Merit for the top cadet program in the wing that year.
As both a member of Civil Air Patrol and the Vice Chairman of the Board of Education for the New Fairfield Public School District, Chapman was instrumental in advocating and founding the 801st Cadet Squadron, the first school-based cadet program in Connecticut Wing.  As the commander of the 801st Cadet Squadron, Chapman led the unit to win numerous awards including the Quality Cadet Unit award three years in a row, 1st Place in the Connecticut Wing Color Guard competition and the National Cadet of the Year.  Chapman also led the 801st Cadet Squadron in support of the New Fairfield Emergency Shelter during three Presidentially Declared Major Disasters:  Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Winter Storm Alfred. In 2013, Chapman transitioned command of the 801st Cadet Squadron to become the initial commander of the next squadron he founded, the 802nd Cadet Squadron.
In addition to being a squadron commander, Chapman was simultaneously the Connecticut Wing Director of Cadet Programs (DCP) from 2011 to the present.  As the DCP, Chapman made numerous strides to improve the cadet program across the wing.  Most notably, the wing cadet membership surpassed 400 cadets for the first time in over 10 years and Connecticut Wing exceeded the national average for many of the key criteria established for the Quality Cadet Unit Award.  Chapman was awarded the Connecticut Wing Cadet Programs Officer of the Year in 2012.
After completing the 2013 National Staff College, CAP's capstone leadership course, Chapman was awarded the Gill Robb Wilson Award and the highest level (Level 5) in the Senior Member Professional Development Program. Chapman's other qualifications include Ground Team leader, Mission Observer and Pilot Rating

Oddly, I was a cadet at the same time. Atlanta 2 was our arch-rival, meaning they identified as Marines while we identified as Rangers. I think I remember this guy. Eric Boe was an Atlanta 2 cadet at the same time as me as well. My step-mother knew him pretty well.
