Title: Florida Wing Locates Downed Aircraft Today

3 hours from alert to the find.  Great teamwork with the aircraft and ground team, and excellent cooperation from the Palm Beach County SO.

This was a textbook case of how it should be done.

Great job Florida Wing.  Just FYI, the article said 4 hours and 15 minutes :)

The article isn't very accurate.  The plane actually went down last night around 6PM, we were alerted by AFRCC sjust before 2AM and found it around 5.

I'm sorry to read that there were casualties, but the work of FLWG will help bring closure to the family that might now exist if it hadn't been for CAP!

Yep, I'm awaiting clearance to do a story on the father/son team.

There were 4 incident staff on a web conference from about 3AM till 11AM.  It worked very well.

Technology played a huge roll in bringing the incident staff together from around the state to coordinate from our own homes.  Also, due to lack of radio comms in the area, sat phone on the plane was critical.

There will be a case study done on this mission, and the use of technology.  This was the first redcap we have done like this, and it worked very well.

Were you able to place sat-phone calls to the aircraft? So far, we have been unable to determine the phone number for incoming calls. Outgoing Caller ID is blocked.

Yes, we had 2-way sat comms.

Again, this was critical for the success of this mission.  If we had not had this capability, we would have done things a lot differently and that 3 hour find time would have been probably double or more.

Our Ops people are now focused of getting this capability in all of our planes.  It's a game-changer.

Was the sat comm the SDIS unit or something else?  The SDIS phones have been working more and more.

EMT I believe the OPS staff for FLWG has all the phone numbers of the aircraft.

I've had the pleasure of receiving a call in flight for a test :)

... using "Today" in a thread title isn't necessarily a good idea.  ;) In a few months, years, whatever, someone will see it and think the same thing. "Today? wow, another one!?"
