Title: Cheap and dirty TPU service cap modification
Post by: AlphaSigOU on February 22, 2007, 01:12:58 AM
If you already have a service hat and don't wanna buy another one just for the TPU, heres the cheap and dirty method for converting a standard service cap to one that will work with the TPU:

Go to Vanguard's military website (www.vanguardmil.com). Under 'COAST GUARD' they sell the silver CG Auxie cap strap: (Or if you're an Auxie, you can probably get it from their uniform sales.)

3082300
COAST GUARD AUXILIARY CAP STRAP ONE HALF INCH SILVREEN - PRICE PER EACH $7.00

Swap the black leather cap strap (the buttons are screw-ons)  for the silver, adjust and voilá! Keep your black leather strap (easily hidden inside the cap)in case you wanna change over to the standard USAF style.

Or you could save every penny and just use a flight cap, right?   ;D :P ;)

(Nice tip...by the way.)

The policy letter just says gray, what's up with that? Is it supposed to be the AF honor guard strap? I think that's the second one posted, is the CGAux strap the same as that?

Whatever, I'm never wearing that uniform, much less a service hat with it. As if the braids weren't enough, you need a bright shiny strap too. Screw that.

Oy...yikes!!!  I have yet to own any of the new uniform.  I am debating getting an aviator shirt and grew pants to leave in the car in the event I have an ELT search while at work.

The real issue is...

1) how hard this item is to find
2) there is no photo
3) its been quite a while and they have yet to spend any time on mitigating these issues.

Uh...nice pic, albiet, I mean there was no photo at Vangaurd.  One would think they would have designed a webpage with no "no photo available" jpegs by t his point.

Oh that's the 18-30 female version, didn't you get that memo?  ;D Gotta love that first element eyes center command, right?

Vanguard sucks, got it. They're doing better on the customer service, really. It does suck they can't get pix up on the site, but honestly how much volume you think they're doing to CAP versus the real mil side of their business. It's just a low priority to them.

When TP and the AF realized how great they looked when added to the uniform.

You mean when TP asked for them as an accessory w/ AF-style service dress & was rejected cause that's gay, so created his own "corporate version" w/o consulting them & the AF had to check & see if pom poms violated international law in some way but still hadn't gotten around to making them compliant with AF regs. That particular uniform ertainly seems to be in the best interest of the AF, at least the interest of those airmen.

Yes, but they have a freakin' monopoly by special arrangement.  Civil Air Patrol is an exclusive client, they have a responsibility to honor that arrangement...or should.

I am very pleased with their customer service, but the WEBSITE needs to be current and functional, not amendments to a hastily thrown together WEPAGE smattering as they have it now.

What can we then say?  Lack of Competion breeds mediocre service?  A basic tenet of Conservatice Economics.

SO, what can we do?

Complain to the lady at HQ. Adds a number to the list & if that gets high enough at some point you'd hope CAP would act on it.

Sure it's an exclusive arrangement, and that sucks cause it puts some outstanding suppliers out of reach, but it's a tiny side business for a big company that's focused on the big military contracts it lives or dies by.

I understand proper Drill, but can you REALLY blame them?  I'd have to be in the "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy to not look.

Bought a brand-new Service Cap from OLCNET for about $10.00-a real bargain.

When I made Major, I bought the "farts & darts" upgrade version for $36.00.

In all my time in CAP I wore them.......twice.
