Title: Flight to get to encampment!
Post by: Glinski.655 on June 13, 2012, 08:22:50 PM
Hey everybody,

I live in michigan and was selected to be on staff at Alaska Wing encampment. Only problem is finding a "Cheaper" way to get there. Was wondering if anyone had gone through this process before. Maybe some places to write/beg/plea with for some support? A round trip ticket is abour 800-1100. OUCH  :o

Thanks,
Glinski

Ask Alaska Wing to issue a Military Support Authorization which may get you on a Space A flight to one of the AF Bases in Alaska. You will have to do the legwork on finding the flight and doing any paperwork required. If you do get a Space A flight, you are not guaranteed a flight back. As soon as you land at Anchorage, rebook for the return flight. When in the Space A system, you are probably flying at the lowest priority. You can be bumped, if needed, until the doors close and the plane starts taxiing.
How did you select the AKWG encampment w/o factoring in transportation?

CLD (Carlsbad, CA) to HNL was only $515.

Use http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ (http://matrix.itasoftware.com/) to get a price spread of dates and figure out your best options, then go booking on the travel sites, or take the fare codes you get to an agent to book it.

(and yes, I know, comparing airfares is total voodoo..)

But realize that you will get different results for the same fare from each of the typical travel venues.

Don't forget to factor in baggage charges (if applicable).

We'll it was more I was chosen. I am the 1st Sgt at MIWG this year. The C/CC for Michigan is also in Alaska. So for me Alaska will be like a trial run(about 60-80) for Michigan(250+). I will be the 1st Sgt for both. I will be attending regardless. I am just trying to limit the amount of pain on the pocket. This is my last year as a cadet so I am trying to get the most out of it. And tell me that going to Alaska isn't cool!

What is your specific itinerary? Detroit departure should give the cheapest fares.

I got $854, DTW-ANC-DTW, 7/24 - 8/2, on Expedia.
