Title: Payment Methods
Post by: exFlight Officer on May 11, 2012, 03:34:32 AM
Hi all,
In the past I have used snail mail (which works pretty well) to send in membership renewal payments. This year I decided to pay online. Well, I get to the payment method screen on eServices and am dissapointed to see that only credit cards are accepted. Personally I am not a fan of credit cards and only use debit. Why doesn't eServices allow debit as a form of payment? Am I missing something?
Thanks,

Don't most debit cards work as a credit card transparently?  Or are you trying to use a PIN #, etc?

Most credit card processing companies process debt cards as well.

I renewed using a visa debt card.

Flight Officer, if you want to build a good credit history you pretty much need to have at least one active credit card account.
This doesn't mean you have to use it, it just needs to be an active account.

Debit cards are nice, but they do nothing for your credit score.

Can't go in debt with a debit card. Credit=debt.

A debit only card is a rare animal anymore. The banks want you to spend.

If your card has a Visa/Mastercard/whatever logo on it, even though it says "Debit" on it, it still runs through the same processor.

I have never seen a PIN transaction option online. That certainly doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but figuring that I've never seen it mainstream, I'm certainly convinced that CAP won't be getting it anytime soon.

OTOH - they are in the minority with their CMS choices, and ... are using some niche-y, crummy, option. So who knows what vendor will convince them that this is The Next Best Thing. ;)

I do appreciate the responses.
a2capt, I only have a plain jane debit card.
PHall, Credit cards still make me cringe  :D  You do carry a valid point. Thanks for reminding me of my credit score  :-X :'( :D
Eclipse, you are certainly correct. My plain jane debit card is among the dying bread I s'pose.
I figured I would catch the wave and renew online this year. Just dissapointed that I couldn't renew with this method  :-\   ::)

I can't believe your bank issues a card that can't be processed as credit.

Flight Officer -- you might be able to use your debit card to transfer a balance into PayPal, and I'm not an expert on this but I thought I recall PayPal offering debit card numbers that could be used for online transactions that would draw from your account balance.  May want to look into that as an option.

I don't use my debit card for on-line transactions, or even many POS purchases. If the account gets hacked, the money doesn't come out of my checking account.
