Title: If Cap is the USAF AUXILLARY why dont we just call it the Air Force Auxillary
Post by: nathan88 on April 26, 2012, 10:32:37 PM
If we are the official auxillary to the united states air force why dont we call ourselves the USAF Auxillary instead of CAP? The name Civil air patrol makes it sound like all we do is fly and patrol the skies when we do so many other actvities, just as the air force has much more personel that do ground work than flying.

Welcome to CAPTalk.

1 - We're not the only auxiliary of the USAF.

b) Our name and function are part of the AFI's and other rules and laws which govern and created us.

3 - While we are always an auxiliary of the USAF, the funding, chain of command, and other related items change depending
on which of the missions we are involved in, and who the customer is - sometimes it's the USAF, sometimes it's 1AF, sometimes is CAP, Inc.
Our existence is both as a private corporation and a military auxiliary.

c) Evan hearkening back to the days of little yellow airplanes, when our line to the military was much more direct, we were still called
"Civil Air Patrol".

First, as will be quickly pointed out by others, we are not the FULL-TIME auxiliary of the USAF. We only have that distinction when serving as an instrumentality of the federal government on missions. Otherwise we are a benevolent non-profit organization.

Second, we were Civil Air Patrol long before the air force even existed.

To put it simply, in today's world, CAP is who we are, USAF-Aux is what we do.

Are they actually an "auxiliary" of the military?

The system is an auxiliary to the main radio system, does that make the organization a military auxiliary?

Also, they aren't really an auxiliary of the "USAF" as much as they are an auxiliary of the "military", right?

From Wikipedia's article on MARS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_Affiliate_Radio_System):
QuoteDepartment of Defense Instruction 4650.02, dated 23 December 2009 changed the status of MARS from an affiliate to an auxiliary (equal in status to the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Civil Air Patrol). This change in status saved the Navy-Marine Corps MARS program from being shut down and put it back in line with the Emergency Communications mission of its sister services (Army and Air Force MARS).

They also have planes. But that program has diminished from its peak a few years ago.

Their long-range comms stuff isn't worth writing home about and is no where in CAP's league.

We were Civil Air Patrol before there was an Air Force to be an Auxiliary for. That's the main reason.

Even back then, MOST of CAP did not fly.

We were the Civil Air Patrol before there was an Air Force!

And as has been pointed out...we actually started under the Department of Civil Defense before they moved us to the Department of War under the Army Air Forces.
