I'm a long way from that look. Since 39-1 says that ribbons may be worn in rows of 4, then the height of the stack can be reduced somewhat. Does anyone wear 4 across on a shirt? I can't recall ever seeing that myself.
For the overall dictator look you must include other decorations, badges, etc. How many other pieces of bling can be added to a shirt or service coat besides ribbons?

If you're wearing 10 rows of ribbons on your service coat, whether in rows of three or four, great; if you're wearing them on your shirt, you're just being obnoxious about it ("dig me!"). Besides, Air Force officers don't traditionally wear ribbons on their shirts, just the enlisted folks.

He is, and I have great respect for General Petraeus, but that does not make the way we are to wear our own ribbons any less valid.
I personally follow the example of just wearing my ribbons on the service coat. Easier that way, and they keep longer.

I had a drill instructor at Parris Island who wore them 4-wide on the charlie shirt. Did not look as weird as you'd think it would.
And to be fair, he's taken 42 years to accumulate those ribbons. I count nine rows, which means less than 35, probably around 32...the top rows are skewed right and empty left. About one every 15 months on average.
But keep in mind that he's probably served in most of the major campaigns since Vietnam. I'd say he can wear his medals and ribbons as he chooses.
I have never worn my ribbons on my shirt, not even in the Army, bough I constantly go asked why not... Just doesn't look that good to me. I did try short stacking a bit, and I just still couldn't get past the look on myself.

The day you award yourself a medal/ribbon/badge you did not earn.
The number of rows has nothing to do with it.

Well there was this Senior Member (Member no more) who showed up in the AF Style Uniform wearing ribbons from:
High School Band
High School Jr ROTC
Active Duty Awards (24 months AD)
"Commemorative" Award Ribbons
and a couple CAP Ribbons from his cadet days.
I was not then a member so really was not in a position to say anything.

Just be happy we don't wear a seperate ribbon for every repeat award!!
most bands do not use ribbons at least in MO I think it has become "uncool" and i can see why... BOA gives out paches that can be put on a band jacket or something like that but i have never actually seen that.

I feel that you should have at least blocked out this cadets face and name tag. While I'm sure this photo is from a public site it is posted here as a symbol of excess. I've been a member here for a few years and thats never been allowed in the past
