Title: Inexpensive Auto GPS w/ Coordinate Input?
Post by: Spaceman3750 on March 19, 2012, 05:18:15 PM
Does anyone know of an inexpensive car GPS with coordinate input? For example, if an aircrew or mission base gives me a set of coordinates, I want it to be able to route me to the nearest road address. I can do this with my gazeteer but I'm thinking that the ability to plug it in and go would save me a lot of time in plotting and routing (roadways in my area are in the habit of merging, splitting, renaming, etc at random intervals and they aren't always clear about it, which makes for a lot of [legal] U-turns).

Thanks!

Yes and no. I have a Garmin GPS that isn't too expensive (by Garmin standards anyway) that allows you to plug in lat/long and it gives you directions. It also can tell you what street address you are at. The 'no' part is that I can't remember what model number it is and I don't have it handy at the moment.

Garmin 3, 4, and 5's should do that and are cheap on ebay.

I will confirm on mine.  Also a lot of apps for both smart phones and iOS as well.

Android Apps:
GPS Status has a function called "Radar". https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
This provides a ton of useful information for a GTM.

Locus https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=menion.android.locus
Does exactly what you want - you can enter a POI via a number of means, including coordinates and it will be displayed on a moving map.
The best part of Locus is not only is it free, but it can be configured to work locally without a data connection.

iOS seems to be pretty sparse on these sorts of apps, though I'm sure someone will pipe up with a decent one.

I also confirmed that you can create a waypoint using the coordinates on the Garmin III/IV/V series.  There are V's on ebay right now under $60.

My tom tom will take lat/lon and calculate the best route.

I'm a big fan MotionX-GPS (http://gps.motionx.com/iphone/overview/ (http://gps.motionx.com/iphone/overview/)) and MotionX-GPS Drive (http://drive.motionx.com/iphone/overview/ (http://drive.motionx.com/iphone/overview/)) for the iOS system.

Almost any GPS that gives directions will take coordinates, that is what the were originally designed to do, so all you hae to do is find it, however that should be relitivly easy.
