Title: special project
Post by: MajorPayne on January 30, 2012, 11:00:05 PM
Hello everyone, I was thinking again today about a good way to help out my squadron. Since I joined the program back in June of 2011, I have noticed, as with others, that our building is in need oif repairs. Every month we have a saturday or two when the cadets and senior members all get together to help clear up our building, making small repairs to building new steps. As sad as it is, eventually we will most likely loose our building to the elements and then we will be left with the task of finding either a new place to meet or coming up with enough money to help build a new building for our squadron. Although our building still has quite a few years left in it if properly taken care of (which it is), I thaught it might be a good idea to look into sponsor or asking for donations to start a building fund. i will most likely not be a cadet in the squadron when the day comes, it would be nice knowing that my fellow cadets and I will have done something for the future cadets of our squadron. Any coments or suggestions on how to get started?

I'm not the expert, but I'd run the idea of a sponsorship thing through your wing legal officer first to avoid any issues with higher headquarters. As far as getting money to update the building, I would approach you state and federal elected officials for any type of special funding opportuntities.

You never know where that may lead.

Correction:
We would recommend you run the suggestion up your CoC to your Sq/CC who should check with the Wing Legal Officer.  ;)

All fund raising must be approved by the Wing Commander, sponsorships and / or donations related directly to real property may need national approval.

Local store of national chains like Home Depot are usually generous with gift cards towards repair supplies.

The others are correct in that this needs to start with the Unit CC.

Good catch.

The funding from the state or federal lawmaker should be done the same way.

You have a building at least.

On topic. You ever ask the Cadet Commander about spring cleaning?

Good luck with that.  a few years years ago (before I joined CAP) someone tried to give my squadron 10K but NHQ said we couldn't have it.  Since I've been around I've tried to get the squadron to do some fundraising, but most of the people that were around when that happened are still pretty bitter about that fact.

You realize this is one of the great CAP Urban Legends, right?

Just think about it for a moment and you have to realize that it makes no sense.

There is absolutely no reason for NHQ or any intermediate commander to deny a cash donation.

And as far as I know, we never have.

Unless there are some unacceptable strings attached that your second or third-hand information leaves out.

And just repeating this kind of nonsensical unsubstantiated hearsay on the internet for the world to see just discourages members and donors.

Which actually harms are dedicated volunteers and the stakeholders we serve.

Maybe it was the Doors Foundation and their bucket of attached strings ;)
