You could always go the free route if you are running Vista/Win 7

I guess free is free, but Norton / Symantec don't get holiday cards from me - too invasive and processor heavy,
and those "all in one" security centers usually do more harm than good.

I don't even run anti-virus on most machines anymore, with the right browser, a little tweaking, and diligence ab out where and
how you surf, there just isn't much need.   Using Linux (where appropriate) doesn't hurt, either.

On machines with less vigilant users I load AVG and call it a day.  It's hard to believe anyone can charge $45-80+ for antivirus with a straight face.

Thanks for thinking of folks, but this thing doesn't do many favors for most people.

It's a processor intensive resource hog to boot. The Microsoft free stuff is just as good, and a lot more friendly. FORI=1TO10:?CHR$(4)"BLOAD SLIDE";I:FORX=1to5000:NEXT X:NEXTI

I use avast! myself because I got the Professional version for $10 instead of $40 during a summer sale. Norton and McAfee both are always too commercial for me and they miss a lot of stuff. Let's not forget though that CAP has a partnership with Grisoft to offer the Business version of AVG free to CAP members. Just look under the downloads section in the middle-part of eServices and follow the instructions.

Yeah, Norton is generally regarded as Junk by anyone who knows how bad it's gotten in the years past.

The AVG version CAP gets is a fine piece of software, and doesn't take up all the processor and memory in your computer. However, the best antivirus is Common Sense Pro 2012 edition.

Guess this turned into A/V review forum now.......
What caught my eye was FREE-
Myself I have one computer that runs Norton (long story/ but lets just say "this copy of windows is not genuine"-- it is but wont validate) All of my other computers (3) I use the Microsoft Security Essentials with and have had good results...

FREE is AVG or Microsoft, Norton's 'free' is tied to shenanigans that are specific in nature. IE, no Visa card, no rebait. :) .. and the multitudes of other reasons why 'rebaits' never get processed.

You didn't send it with the postage stamp cocked at a 45.7 degree angle in a #3 envelope with an extra piece of tape on the lower right corner. (and is that lower right corner with the flap to the left or right?)

Call the #800 and just read the numbers off to them. I've never not gotten a product key.

I have in tha past had good results with rebates. But you must follow the instructions that is the "key" to success- most companies count on a person not following the instructions to evade having to make good-- I follow their instructions to the "T " and for the most part have good success.
Call the 800# ???- I dont follow that

Call MS' 800 number and if your copy of the OS is legit they will give you a fix for the genuine advantage issues.

Rebates also provide the company with an interest-free loan for the 4-6+ weeks between the time you pay your money and the time you ultimately
cash the return check (assuming you get one).

The entire idea behind rebates has basically been corrupted, especially anything you get "direct" from the manufacturer.  The whole reason
rebates started was to insure that price incentives offered by manufacturers were passed on to the consumer and not just absorbed by the
retailer.  When you buy something "direct", you should already be getting the lowest price "direct" from them.  These days they are just using
them to make the price seem lower, knowing that 50+% of them are unclaimed.

Already did that with MS
Unfortunately the computer likely had a bootleg OS when I bought it on ebay as a custom built gamer.
I got the warning a year ago and resolved it at that time by buying a legit key code for the same OS Windows 7 Untimate- I installed that and the system was autheticated as genuine at that point.
Then I did not use the computer for six months, went to use it and lo and behold/ a brand new warning about a not genuine OS pops up- tried to reinstall my code (which I had and worked before) and got nowhere- so I decided I am all done with trying to be legit. I will go without updates- of course they cancelled my security essentials because my OS isnt legit supposedly...
so that computer I run the Norton product on for the A/V and backup capabilities. When the computer eventually needs it I will buy the entire 7 OS disc but not until I absolutely cant avoid it- this is now a battle of stubborness.

If you purchased the code from MS, then it is something they should be able to resolve, or that would be fixed with a scratch load.
If you purchased it from "not MS", then the code you bought was likely hot, too, and is now on the disavowed list.

Bootleg is bootleg, and if you got sold something hot, then it should have been resolved by the seller (or not, in which case you're kinda just SOL).

I found out 6 months after the sale of course and of course the seller does not respond to email lol
Now it is well over a year- Eventually I will bite the bullet and buy a 100% legit OS and install it. For now I throw the Norton on and keep the fingers crossed. Hell I like XP better than 7 and I sure am not going to buy that at this point in time..... Who knows I might eventually try the ubunatu on that if the OS ever quits-- till that point, run and backup often is my plan!
