Title: I'd like to read a narrative by a Mission Observer or Mission Scanner
Post by: parsimonious_instead on December 29, 2011, 09:53:22 PM
I have only the beginnings of an idea of what the Mission Observer and Mission Scanner do.  Can someone point me to an online resource - here or elsewhere, in which someone fulfilling that role sort of gives a sort of "narrative playback" of what they did in the performance of those duties?
  Thanks!

I'm not familiar with any sort of narrative playback that's similar to what you're describing.

Have you had a cup of coffee and a conversation with a current Observer? I think that might be easier to come by.

Taking a peek at the Task Lists and Reference Books would give you a good idea of what's involved.

Go ahead to register for the MS/MO course(s) in NESA this year, and read their curricula from its website first! Good luck! :)

Real Mission:
Got woke up by IC at 0300
Got objective from AOBD/IC
Arrived at Airport at 0415
Helped MP plan flight
Launched in airplane ~ 0500
Flew around ~45 min
Found objective, reported same
Took photos
Returned to airport
Refueled airplane
Completed paperwork, emailed to IC.
Went home, changed clothing
Went to work.
;D

^This. Here's a hypothetical narrative though:

QuoteOn or about 1-2-2012 at 0100Z, Anytown Composite Squadron, MER-SC-1000 responded at the request of the CAP National Operations Center and the USAF ARCC to a report of a downed aircraft in the vicinity of of Columbia Metropolitan Airport, KCAE. One aircraft, CAP3901CP was launched as the primary at approximately 0205Z, with Major Snuffy as the Mission Pilot and Capt Snuffy, II as the Mission Observer. A second aircraft, CAP3902CP, was launched as Highbird with 1st Lt Flyboy as the Mission Pilot and Capt Sees-Blue-Skies as the Mission Observer. Lt Col Commander was assigned as the IC for the incident, and communications with him and his staff was established in compliance with standard CAP national channel plans, Wing comm plans, and the incident comm plan as dictated by the IC and the CUL.

CAP3901CP proceeded to execute a south-to-north route search along I26 just east of KCAE based on information received from the NOC and USAF-ARCC. At approximately 0225Z, target was located at coordinates <blah blah blah N and blah blah blah W>. Mission base was advised and all aircraft were ordered to return to base. All aircraft checked in as returned to base at 0316Z. Mission was closed out with CAP NOC by the IC at 0345Z and all assets were released from operative status.

That work for ya? :D
