Title: Suggestions for a member on an extended break
Post by: Patrick W Bass on September 11, 2011, 11:19:11 PM
About a year or more ago, I had to take a break from CAP to handle some very serious family issues.  Those issues are now resolved and I have maintained my membership during this time.  I've tried to stay current on all the various important CAP changes.  I've been especially thankful for the on-line safety classes.  Many of my operational qualifications will soon expire.  I'd like to become re-involved but since taking a break my financial situation has also changed.  With that in mind, I'm unable to drive the 40 miles (one-way) to my current squadron even once a week.  I've considered changing to a squadron that is closer by (there is one at the ANG base near our major airport) but I feel sort of guilty about that.  Can you all offer me any types of suggestions that may enable me to make some type of contribution to CAP...remotely...?  Serious question.

Thanks.

CAP squadrons are in "communities" to serve communities.   IF it is a financial burden to travel to your current unit  and the unit closer to you will allow you to financially attend, than just visit that unit and put in for a transfer.   Also you should either talk with or send a letter/email to your former unit leadership simply stating that financially you can't afford to drive that distance any more.   BTW depending upon your duties at your new squadron you may not even have to attend meetings on a weekly basis, but that's up to your new unit's leadership.  I've seen volunteers in my unit show up once a month and be available for some other special projects at times and it seems to work.

As weird as it may seem, I agree with him for once.

That's a good suggestion. Thanks for the input.

Let me put a twist on it if I may. I'm currently overseas for work but have maintained my membership as "Senior Member" (not Sponsor) in NHQ-NHQ-996. I'm staying current on my Online Safety Education, but would like to do more if possible. Are there other online courses or other things I can work on that would still count once I return to the U.S. and rejoin an active unit?

Depending upon your current Level (eg. I thru V) in the CAP Professional Development program... you might be able to knock out some of the requirements to earn your Membership (Level I), Davis (Level II) or Loening (Level III) award. Review the necessary requirements at:

Level I
http://members.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_university/level_i_foundations.cfm (http://members.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_university/level_i_foundations.cfm)

Level II
http://members.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_university/level_ii_technical_training.cfm (http://members.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_university/level_ii_technical_training.cfm)

Level III
http://members.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_university/level_iii_management.cfm (http://members.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_university/level_iii_management.cfm)

Match up a requirement from your current level and see if you can take it online at:
