I actually know Bruce Murphy. He's a retired O-6. ARMY O-6. Take that Air Force! :)

So the Air University is
both a military command
and a corporate organization. Hmm...Where have I heard something like that before?

No, its not a corporate organization, its an
educational institution.
Educational institutions have Presidents, Provosts, Chief Academic Officers, Deans, etc.
Military units have Commanders, Vice Commanders, Operations Officers, Flight Commanders, etc.
AU is attempting to couch its organization, outwardly, into a language that is commonly understood in academia, so that its product, its
academic product, is universally understood and accepted in the academic world.
EDIT: BTW, if I recall correctly, having gone thru an accreditation authority's site visit and program review, there are certain requirements for staffing and such of an academic institution to satisfy the accreditation boards and to receive accreditation as an institution of higher learning. You can't just hang a sign out on LeMay Plaza saying "Air University" and handing out Masters and PhD's that mean anything unless you have the accreditation to back it up.
A lot of them also have Boards of Governors...

Just to be pedantic: Most have Board of Trustees (especially private, non-profit schools). Board of Governors are often found at "public non-profits" (oooh, imagine that).
The AU actually has a Board of Visitors.
My good friend Dr. Stephen Fritz sits on the AU Board of Visitors (that's how I know Dr. Murphy, through Steve).

Several years ago this changed for the the Top 3 (Air, War, Naval College) IIRC
Only for the in residence courses and recipients were required to have a Masters completed prior.
