I have a couple of gigs of pictures saved at home that I'd like to share with the rest of my squadron, but I'm relatively ignorant about image hosting services, so I have decided to turn to the experts on CAP Talk for assistance. So, what hosts do you guys recommend? The only real criteria I have is that the host has to be somewhat "family-friendly," meaning that they don't serve ads for inappropriate products and services.

Less than 200 images per Flickr account .. is about as 'free' as you're going to get, or pay annually for Flickr. Otherwise, Gallery3 or similar installed on a hosting account, with many of the web hosts having "one click" installers for these kinds of things.
Picasa Web Albums.
Along with a Google Premiere account you cn get gobs of space for very little (I recently lit up 200Gb for $50 a year), and no ads.
None of the services are going to give you what you really want for free.

You would be better off doing it the old fashioned way and burning a bunch of discs. It's much faster than trying to upload them all and then have everyone download them.

Seriously, as long as you don't mind writing a relatively trivial check, once they are up, they should be much safer
than local storage, and the ability to share is nice, too (though not required or expected).
Optical media will go bad on the shelf and tapes disintegrate, USB keys are susceptible to loss / destruction, and don't get me started about
people who actually leave all their photos on their camera.
The only really "safe" place to store data is on a spinning drive with multiple redundant backups, and today the best games in town are
Dropbox, Amazon S3 (which is what DB uses), or Google storage.
The other nice thing is that once it is uploaded, you become instantly machine & OS agnostic. Windows, OSX, Linux, iOS, Android, whatever. If it
has a browser and connectivity you'll have access.

The question to ask here is what is the purpose? Are you just wanting to give the photos to everyone or are you wanting a permanent online archive of them? If online archive, see the other responses. If sharing large amounts of data with groups of people use DVDs.
It's been proven that a carrier pigeon with a 4gb thumbdrive can beat the internet over a distance of 60 miles...

Ok...what speeds are THEY using? I can download a 700MB movie in 20 minutes.
Of course, once I upload it, someone 10000miles away can download it as well. At the same time as 10000 other people.

ADSL. Download speeds are great. Upload speeds suck. If you are wanting to upload a few gigs of pics be prepared to wait a week for them to be available.
South Africa is your benchmark for data?
That pigeon had no error correction, no resume if it dies, and you can't even be sure it is going to the right place.

I'm paying for 1.5 but I just tested it and am getting 429kb/s down and 166 kb/s up with a ping of 150ms to Chicago. I could mail you a small thumbdrive faster than I could upload it to you.

I like living in the country. I like the freedom and the peace and quiet. I like my nearest neighbor no closer than 500 yards. I like not having to deal with fascist HOA and corrupt city councils and crap like that. To me the advantages of country life far outweigh the lack of decent internet.
Than the Pigeons make sense for use!

If you're planning on doing a unit web site at the same time, just get Dreamhost to donate an account through their non-profits program and use the (theoretical) unlimitedness of Dreamhost bandwidth. Done.
