Title: Tactical Coffee Mug
Post by: Eclipse on June 02, 2011, 12:46:56 AM
This thread showed me something I'd never seen before, but is out of the budget range on this project:
http://captalk.net/index.php?topic=13088

I need a good, liquid-tight travel mug for the bike and packing, etc.  I like to stop at D squared or Mecca on the way to a mission
and keep at least one large java hot for the day.

I have an assortment of mugs and a few thermos', but would like a really hard-kewl one for the 2011 season.

Ideas?

Wait, did you just say "coffee mug / thermos" and "hard-kewl" in the same sentence?

Turn in your Tacti-kool card, sir.  Immediately.

And then tell me which mug you picked, so I can get one.

BTW, while this isn't "coffee-tight," it is pretty cool:

this has some promise:
http://geargeeksreview.blogspot.com/2010/09/contigo-autoseal-travel-mug.html
(and its 16oz..)

And while they don't seal at the hole, these are some of the nicest mugs I own. So much so that around Xmas time when I discovered them, I got rid of 90% of my usual "plastic and steel" travel mugs and bought a couple of these.  And then proceeded to buy a few for people. I even gave one to my ex-wife while our daughter was in the hospital for a week after Christmas (truth be told, she looked like hell and severely coffee-deficient, so I thought a nice mug might cause her to increase her caffeine intake)

The Contico was / is high on my list, but at least one review I read said a 6-ft drop broke the cap (vs a Thermos one that survived without a scratch).
Looks like there might be a flaw in the design that lets liquid into some place on the cap that can't be easily cleaned, too.
(What a culture - people all over the world testing and commenting on coffee mugs!)

A lot of cool ones in this article:

This one seems to be king of the hill in performance, and I've had good luck with Thermos in the past - keeps
things hot or cold all day - but I bet there's something cooler out there, plus I'm not sure I like that lid.

Is it sad that after going thru all the mugs in that review, I realized that I've owned about half of the ones listed that were the "metal & plastic" variety?

I'm a retired CAP Lt Col (shush, you! Say that with a straight face!)   Like the mantra of the Strat Airlift folks ("I go pavement to pavement and there is a club at either end"), I'm seldom more than a dozen steps from a coffee maker. Even in the Holiday Inn "field."

This:

...was supposed to be the SARMUG to rule all SARMUGs, yes I bought it because it was bright orange, but it was also on clearance.

It has the triple threat of being poorly insulated, leaky, and uncomfortable to drink from, but otherwise...

But.. but.. ITS ORANGE!

All hail the safety orange coffee mug.  (leaky and uninsulated as it may be!)

All hail!

(Why do you think I still have it...)
Every time I pick it up I think "An LED in here somewhere would be sweet!

But seriously, I'm looking for something that will work equally well with a Venti hot as well as a Venti cold.  I have twice dumped a
whole drink into my top trunk, which at least once had to be removed to clean.

I'm riding a lot more to CAP stuff since it's summer and gas is pretty high.  I might even be going to NCC in OH, and if I'm able
intend to ride.  So leak proof is a must.

Not to mention it is no fun to open your gear and find it bathed in java.

I work outside most of the year and in the colder months nothing beats a good old Stanley thermos. $20 at Wally World. I usually fill it about 6 am and when I get home at 4 pm if I haven't drunk it all you can still see the steam rising off it. On the hard-kewl scale it's near the bottom but it's a great way to showoff a few zaps you might have picked up.

I have been in search for the perfect mug, cup.  I found(purchased at OLD NAVY) a nice reusable coffe cup wich I get my GIBBS on with.  A nice thermal(cool) mug to keep in the AC this summer would be nice. 8)

Don't tell CAWG about that orange mug: they might make it mandatory to go with the orange shirt.
