Title: Question about the ID card
Post by: paladin82 on June 01, 2011, 09:50:38 AM
What sort of photo do I upload to get a card?  Does it have to be professionally done, or like a passport photo, or will any photo that shows off my glorious kisser do?

If you click the Photo Upload link in the left side menu, it will take you to a page of instructions. Also on that page is a link for Photo/Image Guidelines. That will give you all the info you need for your photo.

Aspect ratio and lighting is generally the biggest issue.

Make sure it is exactly the size indicated so the system will not scale it improperly.

Every photo I have seen is darker by probably 20%(ish) when it prints, so make sure your photo is not muddy or dark going in.

Simple photo instructions:

1.  Have subject put on a uniform (wearing it properly)
2.  Stand subject against a white or light blue wall with nothing on it nearby.
3.  Turn on the camera
4.  Remove the lens cap (and your thumb/fingers from in front of the lens)
5.  Turn on the flash.
6.  Frame the picture so it gets from about 1 foot above subject's head to subject's navel. (if you try to shoot too tight the aspect ratio will be off and you won't be able to crop it properly)
7.  Mash shutter release repeatedly until you get one where the subjects eyes are open (or retinal damage occurs).
8   Upload photo and use crop tool to cut down to 1 or two inches above the head to the name tag if possible.
9.  Click submit.

I suggest cropping the photo just inside the grade insignia on the shoulders (assuming a dress uniform).
That or covering the insignia on the BDU.

That way you don't have to change the photo when you get promoted.

For a lot of members this is small issue, but we've had people challenged at the gate because their card said "Maj" and their photo had
one silver bar.

You're supposed to update the photo annually...

I don't have a uniform yet.  Will the golf shirt do?

About the name tag...how do I get one of those?

The blue polo is a corporate uniform, yes.

The photo posted must be less than a year old, and needs to be updated every five years.

They've changed it then. It used to be annually.

There's never been a requirement to update the photo annually, they don't even mandate the photo itself.

Doesn't it defeat the purpose of the ID, not to mention make it look a bit goofy, to not have the photo?

I've submitted the dang thing 4 times since 2008 and it's never been processed. I've given up. My ID card looks like complete MESS with the space that says "no ID"

Have you checked with your CC? It has to be validated at that level before it will post.

I have a question regarding getting a new ID card.  I just renewed my membership and was wondering what kind of ID I would be getting in the mail.  If I recall, are all SM's getting a photo ID if they have a pic in e-services automatically?  If not, do you have to order a photo ID separately (I still see the link for membership picture ID payment).

There is no longer a separate photo ID card. The new membership card includes a photo if it is in eServices for senior members and for cadets age 18 or older.
Replacement or duplicate cards cost $3 and can be orderd using the Membership Card Payment link in eServices.

For a good chunk of that time, I was the CC. It was validated, just never processed.

If you properly validated it while CC, it likely went to Group, and since eServices doesn't send messages for that sort of thing
was likely never seen by anyone unless you told them it was waiting.

Your current commander should be able to validate it today.

A sitting CC can not validate his/her own picture. The next higher echelon would have had to validate it.  I went thru this myself a couple years ago.
