Now the quake is reported as an 8.9 on the Richter Scale and centered 250 miles north of Tokyo. USGS here in Golden Colorado is on full alert.

Tsunami alerts out for all of the Pacific rim. 3AM Hawaii time is the first wave. Multiple waves have been generated by numerous
aftershocks. No idea yet as to the size and extent of damage and deaths.

This one is 100 times the energy of the Haiti earthquake. This is said to be one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded.

Tsunamis as tall as 24 feet have been reported in northern Japanese Islands. Meaning this is larger wave than the 2004 Indonesian Tsunami. The pictures on CNN and MSNBC are remarkable as a large wave sweeps through a city near the epicenter and carries away ships, people, cars, buildings, and infrastructure. http://www.cnn.com/

I hate to be an alarmist, however at this time, this event appears to be epic in proportion.

Even though Japan is set-up for robust response and with well engineered infrastructure, this event is spreading out across the Pacific.

Do we know if Pacific Region has been called up?  If I'm not mistaken Hawaii Wing had their airborne megaphone setup for just this kind of thing.

Stay safe folks.

According to reports I read, Hawaii Wing had their first aircraft launched within an hour of the alert, and followed up with five more planes, all sounding an airborne tsunami alert to remote coastal areas.

In CAWG, 2 aircrafts in Northern California, 2 aircrafts in Central California, and 2 aircrafts in Southern California are standing by with the crews ready to launch. CAWG is also on ALNOT per the request of CALEMA, just in case.

My agency is all geared up for a response and it looks like we might deploy assets to Japan. Luckily not much has developed on the tsunami issue in R9 and 10.

The initial crying need in Japan is to get air-reconnaissance up, pictures to command, coordinates sited, and coordination underway. Roads are blocked or ruined. Infrastructure is down for 100-150 miles around their major affected area. I hope members that think the days of CAP being a lead Civil Defense and Civilian Response element - and not just an after thought - are taking notes. In a National Emergency like this one - we'd have every asset on duty - working hard - and delivering the goods.

God Bless the people Japan. This terrible misfortune is an alert to us all. One day if the New Madras fault, big Cal-earthquake, Yellowstone caldera blows - or a high, wide, and horrible tsunami takes out large portions of our coasts... make sure you are ready to respond.

America will need you and pronto. Today is a good day to check your credentials and gear, while monitoring the news.

I'm just curious, because I've been following the story since it happened, and if I'd stuck with CAP, I had been interested in getting qualified--anybody brushing up on their Radiological Monitoring skills?

I checked out my class notes from 1971, but don't think they match current equipment.  ;)

The CDV-781 Aerial Survey Meter was a compromise in many ways.  Not sensitive enough except for surveys for the first few weeks post-attack.  Not really suitable for most power plant accidents, again due to sensitivity.

It would be relatively simple to gang up a modern instrument with scintillation detectors and a GPS logging device for a quick survey solution.  DOE uses helicopters (Bell 412's, last I knew) and some some twin-engine props for the larger, lower resolution surveys.

I used to teach Radiological Defense and monitoring in Delaware, years ago -- did a couple of classes for the Delaware Wing.

And yes, I own a very nice, recently calibrated, suite of instruments to this day -- everything from alpha survey to gamma.  My comm truck has two gamma alarms set at 20 mR/hr -- you don't know you're in the s--t until the alarm goes off, after all.  And we have several reactors here within spitting distance.
