Title: Civil Air Patrol Aircraft Crew Hit By Laser
Post by: RADIOMAN015 on December 17, 2010, 04:40:50 PM
Interestingly, the December 2010 "Safety Beacon" has an incident involving a CAP plane on a night approaching being lit up by a green laser (KGTU Georgetown TX).

This is the first report I've seen of a CAP aircraft having this happen.    A quick google news search indicates 2 other incidents in different areas of the country in November 2010 (UT & FL)

I know locally about 5 years back we had an issue when military aircraft were on approach for night ILS training, someone would shine a white spotlight into the aircraft's flight deck/cabin.   The individual was eventually caught.

I noticed that too.  While I really don't want to see those things outlawed like they were in a previous place I lived, I can understand why so many are for it.  I'm sure its probably a kid.

It also reminds me of a Tom Clancy book I read where someone took out a plane that way while they were trying to land.

Find the person(s) and charge them with attempted Murder and Terrorism.

When I bought my first green laser, someone asked why... "I fire back" ;)

I do have one that would probably piss off someone big time if I hit 'em with it, too. I also have lasers that can go through walls ;-) But.. those would be a bit difficult to fly with.

Seriously, fly the plane first. But .. it's nice to dream. :)

Ive been hit with a laser 3 times (not CAP flying) Once was flying a helicopter and the other two were flying a plane.  Once in the plane I got hit at 5500ft.  My whole cockpit turned a brilliant green.  It was the first time I had ever been hit with one and for a brief moment I actually though I was having some sort of medical condition.  The helicopter isnt to bad because at night we have NVGs on and it protects your eyes "a little".
Shooting a laser back at them you would have to be pretty good.  Id say chances are 100% that you wouldnt even get near them.  Its much more harsh in the plane because the laser light bounces off the inside of the plexiglass and illuminates everything inside.  its not just a dot.

Happened to me in CAP aircraft a couple of years ago. Was about 3 mi from a towered airport on 45 to final. Really lit up the cockpit.Got hit twice.  Reported it to the tower and it was on the ATIS in 5 minutes. As far as I know, the perp was not found.

That's because perp doesn't trigger the profanity filter. The word he wanted to use probably would.

Got hit a few months ago flying into Vegas.  The LASAR came from the Lake Mead area.  A little research showed a campground near where it came from. It was reported to the authorities.

I think so.  It was the one about the war with Japan and the unspeakable scenario that landed Jack Ryan in the presidency.  Loved the movies, but will never read another Clancy book.  I know there's lots of fans out there, but I really struggled to finish that book.  Then, because of the ending, I bought the sequel but never got more than a chapter or two into it.

That's the one, and I prefer the books to the movies.

Clancy books were just made for when you have jury duty.

Me too, I have read all of the books but really didn't enjoy any of the films.

I have found that those that started out reading the shorter ones from the early 80's get more into the series. Almost all of the latter books are in excess of 1000 pages, much of it background detail that sets the stage for the good stuff at the end. You have to have some investment in the characters to get through that stuff.

Yeah that was the hard thing for me.  Way too much information.  He couldn't just tell you that Capt. So-&-So was flying the jet.  He's got to tell you what the guy ate for breakfast and stuff like that.

I would agree. Attempted murder of how ever many people where on the plane.
