I have a friend who joined the Army and wants to stay in CAP. Does he have to register as a senior member now that he is enlisted or can he stay as a cadet till he's 21?
AD Army or Reserves/Nat. Guard?
If Active duty, he's an auto-senior.
If Guard/Reserves, he can stay on the cadet rolls until he hits 21.

Unless he deploys then he's a SM.

It's not automatic, you still have to do the paperwork.

What about the short-deployment loophole thing I keep hearing about? Something like a 179-day deployment loophole...
Active Duty Army- he is now a SM, congrats!
Army National Guard- his choice.
Army Reserves- his choice.
P.S. If your friend is ARNG or Reserves and deploys, he's probably required to become a senior because of the deployment.

Only if it's EAD. Deployments aren't necessarily automatically AD, depending on the circumstances. There was a discussion on this earlier (something to the effect of 180 days makes EAD and auto-senior, and Guard tends to aim for 179.)
See, HGjunkie saw it too! ;D
If he is active duty, he will need to submit a CAPF 12 with a fingerprint card before basic training.
It is not automatic. Failure to do so should result in a membership termination with a CAPF 2b.
If he is joining the Reserves or NG, he can remain a cadet unless he goes on extended active duty.
See CAPR 35-3 and CAPR 39-2.
Thank you

Here's the reference that HG and I were referencing.
We will refer to this reference of the reference when we need a reference again.

Don't push your luck. Deployment, even for short periords, is still a period of active duty...governed by U.S. Title 10 Code.

The spirit of the reg is that someone that goes over to kill bad guys should no longer be in ranks with the other cadets. Such a person is now an adult and needs to put away "childish" things.
The reg says "extended active duty." You can get sent to foreign places, training, etc and still not be on EAD. Once they are issued EAD orders, their cadet membership ends, even if they return to their normal status as a guardsman.
Ok so he is active duty and isn't going to be deloyed till May so does he have to wait till he gets deployed to change to SM or does he have to do it at the next meeting?

1. Depends if the deployment is EAD or not. How long is the deployment scheduled for? If it's 179-days or less and not considered EAD, he doesn't have to file for senior membership at this time.
2. If the deployment is extended active duty, he wouldn't need to file until he actually goes on EAD. Just receiving orders to a future "appointment" for some EAD doesn't mean he has to convert now.
Pylon, if he is really active duty... It doesn't matter if he's getting deployed or not. He's already active duty, that means time for the Dark Side.

IF HE HAS GONE TO BASIC TRAINING:
He needs to file immediately, or he can be terminated from the program with little chance of joining again. Tell him do it at the next meeting.
IF HE IS IN DEP/WAITING TO GO TO BASIC TRAINING:
Immediately before OR after Basic.
Active Duty means you are now an adult and a SM in the eyes of CAP. But he is not Active Duty until he completes Basic.

Doubt that... it's a cause to terminate, but it is not a "for cause" termination... those are the punitive causes.
Ok gottcha and yeah when he deployes in May, he'll be gone for 6 months
My personal suggestion: w/ the assumption he is not AD already.
Unless he is a click away from a major award tell him to transfer over now. Getting a senior file and level 1 done now will simply help his transition along after he returns.
If however he's an achievement away from earhart or similar tell him to push hard till march/april and then transfer before shipping out.
USA= Transfer to Senior Member effective day he leaves for Basic Training
USAR=Stays a cadet until 21 unless they are mobilized
ARNG= See USAR
