Title: SDIS health
Post by: Robborsari on December 04, 2010, 05:42:03 PM

Globalstar is supposed to have launched 6 new satelites:
http://www.globalstar.com/en/index.php?cid=107

And has Eighteen more on the way:
"The first six second-generation satellites were launched on October 19, 2010, using a Soyuz launcher from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan[10][11]. These second-generation satellites are expected to provide Globalstar customers with satellite voice and data services until at least 2025. Eighteen more satellite Launches are scheduled in February, April and June of 2011.[12]"  (From Wikipedia)

Is anyone having success with SDIS since October?  We have tried it on a few sarexs without being able to hold a connection long enough to transfer photos.

I think it works 20%? of the time.

We think it's just faster to fly up get the pictures you want, fly down and upload them all via high speed internet.  You get more pictures, and higher resolution photos up asap.  A laptop with a 3g aircard/usb stick sends data faster.

That has been our experience as well.  We go get our pics and if the customer needs them we land at the nearest airport, download them to the computer, upload the data track and photos into a program called ARGUS which is web based then our customer can log in and view them.  It really works well.  We use an air card if the airport does not have wireless internet access.

+1 - rarely is there a need for near-time photos that can't wait a few more minutes, remember we are secondary and tertiary response.  In 99% of the cases, the newschoppers have already sent good video of the hot spots and we are doing detailed surveys or checking remote areas not seen on the news.

To counter the first "what if"... If you see someone on a roof waving for help, you call it in with Lat/Long, not send a photo back to the ICP.

In Arkansas, we have a PRIMARY response mission if the New Madrid Fault goes active.  The mission calls for using ADIS in order to allow ADEM the ability to have near real time information without having to wait for the plane to RTB or land at an airfield which may or may not have high speed internet capabilities. As far as using an air card, that relies on the cellular infrastructure being intact, which may or may NOT be the case in an earthquake (we plan on it not).

We have been drilling ADIS a bunch lately and are cautiously optimistic about the capabilities of the system with the new satellites coming on line. So far I am more cautious than optimistic.  Other wings experiences DO vary Eclipse, try to remember that PLEASE.......

"Rarely" does not equal "never", which is why I used the word.  That doesn't change the fact that CAP is a secondary responder at best,
even in ARWG for the fault, odds are yo won't be up for the better part of a day, if not more, and you won't self-deploy.

actually we have a preplanned response. If it hits, we hit the sky on a standing order.....

You have pre-arranged NOC approval?

This is the first time I've seen something of this nature pass the Eclipse sanity check >:D.
