Title: Darker Shades of Blue-The Rogue Pilot
Post by: Flying Pig on October 24, 2010, 03:06:36 AM
Has anyone read it?  I see they have a chapter about Civil Air Patrol in it?  Seems like a pretty good case study about the attitudes that affect pilots and turn the "rogue".

Darker Shades of Blue is a case study of the Fairchild AFB B-52 crash caused by a rogue pilot.  However, the last time I read it, I don't recall anything about CAP and the focus wasn't on the behaviors of Bud Holland, but the environment and leadership structure that permitted his behaviors.

IIRC, it was more focused on the actions of his leadership permitting his behavior.  More strategically, its about ethical leadership.

It's really a shame that the passengers Holland had on that flight died, and their children and families got to watch.

I've read it, and I too did not see anything about CAP in there.

Definitely about the environment the fostered his attitude; case studies like these make even cadets realize the importance of transitioning information and following up on inherited problems. It isn't even written thickly IMHO, as it took me little effort to actually read, though much to process the information given.

243 page book.  I have attended several classes about the Czar 52 incident.  Its in there also, but this book covers several studies into CRM and how rogue attitudes affect pilots.

LTC Tony Kern was part of the Czar 52 investigation and later wrote a book covering rogue pilots in several professions.  Firefighting, Crop dusting, and he even mentions Civil Air Patrol in one of his chapters.  I have not read it.  Thinking about getting it.

Kern, Tony T. (1999). Darker Shades of Blue: The Rogue Pilot. McGraw-Hill Professional Publishing. ISBN 0070349274

I think we're talking about two separate, but related, sources.  I'm pretty sure the "Darker Shades of Blue" was "A Study in Failed Leadership" and an abbreviated version used as a case study.

This one seems to be a bit more comprehensive and addresses not only the importance of the leadership but the attitude and viewpoint of the pilot.  What's the worse that happens if you get it?  If you don't like it, you can just sell it on Amazon again :D
