Title: Combat Control Center School? & Hawk Ranger Medic School?
Post by: juicedude10 on August 25, 2010, 03:10:11 PM
Hey, I haven't joined CAP yet, but I want to, and I'm planning on going to the meeting tomorrow, so what do I wear?

Also, my friend says if I join, next year (it's the PA WING) I can go to Hawk Ranger Medic School?  Is that true?

And, what is the Wright Brothers award?  Do you have to go to Combat Control Center School if you get the Wright Bros. award?

These are all questions best answered by your squadron. Trust me, they'll have the answers.

As far as what to wear, dress nicely and have a neat haircut. Good jeans and a polo shirt, or something similar. Ripped jeans and an old tee shirt isn't the first impression you want to make.

1. Find out what the unit is wearing. If bdus (camos), wear a neat shirt, jeans (without rips or holes), hiking shoes or sneakers. If blues/dress uniform, wear a dress shirt (light colored preferably), dress or casual slacks, dress shoes.

2. Don't know what the requirements are, but I think you have to do the basic HMRS before HMRS medic school. I'm also pretty sure you have to go to encampment prior to HMRS.

3. Wright Brothers award signifies the end of Phase 1 for cadets. It marks the transition from being a follower to a leader. You do not have to go to ANY special activities (CCCS is one, HMRS is another). You do have to go to encampment before earning the Mitchell, marking the end of Phase 2 for cadets.

These are all questions that will be answered soon after you join.

First steps... Attend a few meetings, officially join CAP, get involved with your unit, *then* start asking questions about special activities like HMRS. Joining should not be about a specific activity, it should be first and foremost about the program and organization.

You only have to have completed achievemnt 1 and be at least 13 years old to attend the basic course at HMRS; no encampment is required.

The medic course requires completion of a Basic year or equivilent training.  There is no official list of "equivilent"; usually it includes GTM2 or above and attendance at such schools as PJOC, CCOC, TX GSARSS, FL, NH or PR wing Ranger schools; but those waivers are usually determined on an individual basis by the program instructors.

Yes thanks, this whole thing is pretty interesting, and now, does anyone have any advice for remembering the ranks?  You see, my dad is an Ex- Army officer, and I want to be one too, (I'm 13), so they're really what I remember..

How to you memorize information the best? A lot of new cadets make flash cards or something like that.

You can also get by until you learn everything by learning terms of address. If they three or less stripes you can safely just use their name or 'Airman' in you need to be formal. Anyone with more than three stripes should be addressed 'Sergeant', except for an eight-striper (three up, to make it easier), who you should call 'Chief'. Officers will be wearing epaulets or have cloth ranks sewn onto their collar. Address them 'Sir' or 'Ma'am' as appropriate (don't mix that one up!).

Past that, your new unit will teach you everything you need to know.

The best way to memorize them is to break it all up:

Full title/Abbreviation/How you would call them when new

Airman Basic - C/AB - Airman
Airman - C/Amn - Airman
Airman 1st Class - C/A1C - Airman
Senior Airman - C/SrA - Airman

Staff Sergeant - C/SSgt - Sergeant
Technical Sergeant - C/TSgt - Sergeant

Master Sergeant - C/MSgt - Sergeant
Senior Master Sergeant - C/SMSgt - Sergeant
Chief Master Sergeant C/CMSgt - Sergeant/Chief (Most prefer Chief, and have a heart attack when called a sergeant)

Second Lieutenant - C/2d Lt - Lieutenant/Sir or Ma'am
First Lieutenant - C/1st Lt - Lieutenant/Sir or Ma'am

Captain - C/Capt - Captain/Sir or Ma'am
Major - C/Maj - Major/Sir or Ma'am

Lieutenant Colonel - C/LtCol - Colonel/Sir or Ma'am
Colonel - C/Col - Colonel/Sir or Ma'am

All of this information is available in the leadership texts when studying for the first achievement, but that's just how I had learned it some 7+ years ago.

While an airman can refer to an airman by First or Last name, I find that most cadets prefer to use the title out of respect/pride of accomplishments.

Yes I'm familiar with the Army, so, it would probably mess me up, like usually I'd see Capt. Bar's on someone, no matter which branch, and go, "Hey, look there's a captain!," when in the Navy, I believe, it's LT.

I read through the posts and I dont think I saw this part of your initial post addressed.   There is no Combat Control Center School.  I am sure you are talking about the Combat Control Orientation Course.  There is no requirement to attend the course for anything you will do in CAP.  This is an activity you can attend if you chose and are selected.  It allows you the opportunity to train on a limited basis with Air Force Combat Controllers.  Nothing you learn there will have anything to do with your progression thought the cadet program.  However, I have no doubt the things you learn and experience there will be invaluable in assisting you with making career decisions and making you a more well rounded solid cadet.  In 3-4 years I hope to get my 12 yr old C/B son in on it.  By then he should be about 16 ish and be a C/ Maj, LTC or C/Col ;D

You'll be fine with officer grades then, the Air Force and Army are the same there.
