Unfortunately the pilot did not survive, but at least the family has closure- though that is small condolence right now.
GAWG was on this within hours of realizing he was missing, with squadrons reacting and forming ground teams (the first was all fully qualified) with admirable speed.
Cadets I met through encampment were involved, and across the state efforts were made by many to ensure the search was not lacking in volunteers.
Sad deal. It will be interesting to see the determined cause of the crash. R44s are pretty reliable helicopters. I have no interest in ever flying one.....but still reliable.

I thought the 22's and 44's were so easy to kill yourself in, that the FAA mandated special training just for those types of helicopters?

Is it because of the tall rotor mast? I would imagine that would cause wicked CG oscillations relative to the rotor disc.

If I remember right, it has something to do with being able to take the tail off with the main rotor if you do a certain series of control movements. Capt Steht??
