Lately, I've been thinking of making some Cadet Program instructional videos, to post on YouTube and/or burn on DVD. I've noticed that some Cadets tend to learn much better through watching/listening rather than through merely reading a textbook or manual.
Topics would range from teaching leadership and aerospace chapters, general leadership lessons, uniforms, new Cadet orientation ("Great Start" program), or anything else Cadets should know.
I figure this could be a method for Cadets to supplement their learning as well as have an on-demand resource for various material.
I was wondering what everyone thought about this idea and if there are any potential issues with doing this, even if I don't claim for them to be "official" CAP videos, etc.
I have long thought about doing some videos to demonstrate uniform care/preparation and drill, but I have never had the resources or time to do it.
I can't see any major issues, just make it clear that you are not doing it in any official capacity.

If you put all the effort in that it will require why not try and get an official sanction on them? Send them up the pipe and see if you can get NHQ to send them back down to all the rest of us.

I'd love to get these videos officially sanctioned so as to benefit the widest audience. What would be the process involved to get this project approved?

Just create some videos and restrict access to your unit, garner feedback and make them better. If you wind up with something
you can actually use, then contact NHQ.
Sounds like a great project for some enterprising cadet officers and NCOs to take on.

I figure I'll get started looking into this and release them locally at first and get feedback as you said- perhaps it can eventually be used on a larger scale, but it would obviouslly need to be perfected to be used at the National level.
Many years ago, I uncovered a 16mm AF D&C film from the 1970s that was actually pretty good, but some of the D&C commands had changed enough that you'd never really want to use it for teaching cadets. (ie. they used the command "By the Right Flank, MARCH" instead of "Right Flank, MARCH"..) I did have it transferred to video, however, and now I have that on DVD, too. Sadly, in the transfer process, the sound is just ever so slightly out of sync from the picture and it makes D&C related stuff a little wonky, too.
We were considering a darn-near shot-for-shot remake of it, shot in a weekend at the Armory my unit met at, but we could never get our stuff together enough to ever do it.
I've been thinking about this project lately and I think it could benefit Cadets to have video presentations on various topics, with on-demand (youtube or DVD) accessability. Today, I ordered a High Definition (1080i) camcorder (I needed one for some other non-CAP projects anyway) to start working on this endeavor.
So far, these are some of what I've come up with during a moment of brainstorming:
- New Cadet Orientation ("Great Start Program")
- Uniform Basics (Insignia, etc.)
- Leadership Curriculum (teaching basics of each chapter)
- Aerospace Curriculum (teaching basics of each chapter)
- General leadership topics
- Drill
I was wondering if anyone had suggestions as to topics I should cover.

You could incorporate a lesson of Respect On Display. I found that my cadets did not take to the pamphlet well but liked the hands on instruction and watching other cadets do it.

I too found that while CAP has many pamphlets and various other texts that they may/may not read, it seems the Cadets often don't really internalize them until they learn the material in an active and personal manner- usually via a class, fellow Cadets teaching them, etc. Perhaps a video can help with this.

Above mentioned is an outstanding idea. If you're putting as much time and effort into this as you say, than almost every squadron in CAP, including mine, can benefit from this.
Just throwing this out there, but if you want some feedback on the finished product before you post it, PM it/them to me. I'll be happy to help any way I can. :)

Just an update... I purchased an HD camcorder and have started to plan out potential video topics, etc.
Also, I casually mentioned this idea to several local members as well as the the DCP and Deputy COS/Programs and they all liked it, and added that I should record some of the classes I gave at a recent RCLS- something also requested by many of the students.
It seems everyone has been very receptive to this idea and I hope to start filming soon.
Try to get some random action/activity related to the topic in there too, perhaps like in the uniform stuff, show the Color Guard in action, "this is why you do this, for that" kinda thing. Cadets like to see themselves, and each other on video too.

Did something interesting -
LRAFB had an airshow / open house we had a large participation in - and I got the pleasure of being the project officer (lucky me). I created this video to serve as a safety breifing prior to the air show and all particiapting members (about 85) had to watch it BEFORE arrival. It seemed to work pretty well. I'm going to go back and fix some slight production errors, but here you go. (Please wait for final version if you want to use it yourself).
