Title: Our Squadron Slept on a Battleship!
Post by: Smoothice on June 07, 2010, 08:28:29 PM
Our squadron took about a dozen cadets and a couple of SM's to a nearby WW2 Battleship on display. We stayed the night and slept in cots inside the ship. It was a very memorable experience! We even preformed two flag ceremonies (raising and lowering) on the deck with a crowd watching.

It was great!

I think "sleeping under the airport" is even more kool.

Here's that "airport" at its current location (http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=h&lat=32.713833&lon=-117.17496&zoom=18).

I agree, put one of the Iowa's back in commission and treat it like the USS Constitution (http://www.history.navy.mil/ussconstitution/).

Yes,
It was the USS Massachusetts, at Battleship Cove, Fall River, MA

Anyone that is within driving distance should check it out. It really puts into perspective what the WW2 sailors went through!

I'd suggest the USS New Jersey, but I like having it where it is so I can visit it.  The New Jersey has sleep-overs too.  The Boy Scouts do it a lot.  CAP should.

Who's gonna pay for it? Who's gonna maintain it? Where you gonna get parts? A battleship takes a lot more of all of the above than a small wooden sailing ship.

Overnight on a sub. I'd like to do that one.
