Title: A question on uniform wear and timming.
Post by: C/Martin on June 02, 2010, 01:57:19 PM
If a CAP member passes away, is it appropriate to wear a uniform to the funeral?

I beliave yes, if that person was a CAP member.  Check 39-1 to be 100% sure.

According to CAP Protocol pamphlet 3:
"CONCLUSION
A funeral is a sad occasion and it is important that the wishes
of the next of kin be honored. Civil Air Patrol personnel may,
of course, attend church and grave site funeral services of a
fellow CAP member, in or out of uniform.
Under no
circumstances, will a CAP member participate in the funeral
ceremonies unless specifically requested."

If you do wear your uniform, make sure it's perfect. And I mean PERFECT. From your haircut to your shoe shine.

What if it is a military service member that is not part of CAP?

You gotta ask yourself then, is it appropriate? Are you doing it to honor the guy, or to show off? Is it going to distract from the rest of the funeral?

Unless the association with the deceased was due to CAP (liason officer, etc) I'd think no.

Well, the people on CAPTalk who believe that it is ok to wear a CAP uniform for any reason that gets into their head whether or not it has anything to do with CAP will say thats just fine since it has something to do with the military while others who believe that there needs to be a legitimate obvious link to a CAP activity in order for a CAP uniform to be worn or lacking an obvious link, specific permission to wear the uniform has been granted  by their commander.

If it was say, someone who inspired you to join CAP who was military, or a family member, or someone that you had some link to that it would serve to honor them by being there in a perfect uniform, then yes. Ask the parent/spouse/family if it would be OK and then ask your commander for approval. My guess is if the motivation is true neither one will have a problem with it.
