Title: Northeast Region Color Guard Competition Results
Post by: RADIOMAN015 on May 30, 2010, 08:54:17 PM
Here's the results:

First Place:  Massachusetts Wing -- Westover Composite Squadron

Second Place:  Pennsylvania Wing (squadron(s) unknown)

Third Place:  New York Wing (squadron(s) unknown)

Other Wing Teams participating  CT, NH, NJ, RI.

I give a big salute the all of the cadets & their senior member advisors that worked so hard to get to the competition.

Special recognition goes to the Mass Wing team , that I know practiced for over 300 hours since the team was formed in February 2010 (with 2 returning members from the prior year team).

To the best of my knowledge, there was no drill team competition at the NER Westover competition.
I think there was only one drill team that was going to come to the competition, but they apparently backed out, at least I didn't see any drill team at the award ceremony.

If I recall correctly, New York was the only Wing with a drill team, thus they become the NER drill team by default.

Congrats to MAWG.

My old squadron was the color guard representing NH wing.   I saw them at the Memorial Day parade the other day (I was walking with my son's Cub Scout pack, they were 6-8 units ahead.  They were in step, I was not. It was making me mental!)  and they mentioned they placed 6th (of what appears to be 7 teams).  Hey, at least they won Wing.. <GRIN>

Interestingly, they were putting their flag spades on the flag staffs prior to the parade, brand new ones they'd picked up for region comp before they understood that the flags would be provided.  First time they'd screwed them in, and *snap* off the came the spade as they were snugging it up (by hand). Left the threads in the socket on the staff and everything.  I dunno where they got those from, but if I was Vanguard, I'm not surprised.  The color guard was mightily annoyed.

Congrats to MAWG.

From what I was told and saw while I was at the Comp there were no drill teams.  The NY team could have been given the award by default as it was the only one who was registered.

If this was the case, I'm disappointed that my old DT (NJ), dropped the ball and didn't even field a team this year.

DBlair, as someone on the inside of this years team,  the 2010 NJ DDT was made up of a 9 cadet airman that had less than a year in the program. it was decided to wait until the 2011 season to allow them to try again.

Interesting. I remember when I was on it, it was made up mostly of C/LtCols and C/Cols (why some joked that DDT stood for "Diamond Dream Team") with so many trying out each year that it kept the cycle flowing as Cadets aged out of the CP and the younger learned from the more seasoned team members, etc. I wish I was back in NJ, I'd love to help train the NJDDT and get it back to its former glory. In the meantime, I've been asked to consider leading the DT program down here, so we'll see how that develops in the coming year or two. Make all of us old school Dragons proud and get that team ready for a successful comp next year!

The last thing I remember about the DDT was 1998 when our team of C/Amn types who had been in CAP less than a year left them wondering how we beat them in Standard Drill, Quiz Bowl and Inspection.  Of course, that year, "Team Lightning" from MA came out the overall region champs (not us).  Either way, it was fun to see the puzzled look on all the C/Lt Col's faces when C/A1C Snuffy shut out their whole team during Quiz Bowl.   >:D

Never underestimate the new guys.

the DDT is in a rebuilding phase, the 07 and 08 teams did well at Regions, 09 (my team) placed 4th at nationals. most of us from the 09 team either went on to college or left the program, or in my case and the team commanders ( as of last monday anyway lol) aged out and became seniors. the current project leader was on the 86 team and is our DCP, both myself and team commander from 08-09 plan on coming back to help get these new dragons up to speed for the 2011 NER CC

the 09 team was made up of a all of the ranks from C/LTC down to C/A1C and while we got out tails kicked in the knowledge bowl and written test, we did place in all of the drill events, taking first in  inspection ( something im very proud of because i put all of the male uniforms together upon arrival to Oregon, 11 uniforms in 19 hours...a record lol)

but i wish the NYWG team best of luck, if there anything like last years CG champions they will do well ;)

Mass Wing is again trying to start a wing wide (staffed from different squadrons) drill team.  I think the recruiting meeting was held today.   At this year's wing conference there was a presentation made at the general assembly  by the former drill team's (many years ago) won at the National competition, by some of the former cadet team members.  They also set up an information table outside the general assembly hall.

I salute the cadets & senior members who will spend many hours practicing for this competition.   It's been difficult for some (many?) wings to form drill teams, because squadrons' have a difficult time forming their own teams.
