Title: JROTC Raiders
Post by: njrotcdibich on May 10, 2010, 12:43:33 AM
Hello everyone!

I am part of a brand new NJROTC unit at my local high school. I was just recently selected as our new PT officer for the next 2010/2011 year. As being the new PT officer, I want to start a Raiders Team. I have no knowledge what so ever on the subject, so I was wondering if anyone out there knew anything at all! I am opened minded to any and all comments/knowledge you all have!

Thanks

You want to start a team that you don't know anything about?

Say Again, Over!

For us CAP types here....what's a Raiders Team, what does it have to do with PT?

I mean I know basic things. A JROTC Raiders team is the toughest of the bunch. They pt hard and do various challenges and events such as building a rope bridge and getting their team across it. Or, they are given a map and compass on a terrain and are suppose to find things or get back to camp etc. And, they are suppose to be experts in first aid. Some challenges dealing with first aid is that a volunteer simulates an injury, and the raiders asses it and treat it properly. Then they are instructed to carry them on a stretcher over and under obstacles to a certain point or place. This is the knowledge that has made me want to start a Raiders Team in my NJROTC program.

Okay....so what exactly is the question?

Do you possess any of these skills?  Does one of your ship mates?  Does one of your instructors?

If not do you know of anyone who does have these skills and are they willing to teach you and your team?

Try cadetstuff.org (http://www.cadetstuff.org) They are geared toward all cadet programs. This is a CAP oriented board and we don't have a clue what you're talking about.

OK, sorry. I was googling Raiders, and it led me to this site where a member talked about the challenges and events of a typical Raiders competition. Thanks anyways!

Actually some of us do and I personally did the OPS Plan for our wing's statewide version of the Raider Challenge.

The competition is based upon the Ranger Challenge in ROTC units nationwide. It is modified by removing the more combat themed events and focusing on the teamwork and leadership events.

Think of it as a highly demanding ground team competition.

To the OP, some, but very few, CAP units participate alongside JROTC units in the Raider Challenge.  With this in mind I would echo Captain Sinn's recommendation of cadetstuff.

Good luck!

We (Long Island Group) just completed last weekend an activity called the "Ground Team Challenge".  The activity consisted of -

1) A graded 24 hr Pack gear dump on a randomly selected member from each team (Penalty - One minute added to their team's final time for each missing item),

2) A timed teamwork/leadership exercise combined with

3) A timed 4.5 mile hike using topographic maps (but no trail maps) supplied to each team, and

4) A series of six land navigation problems (compass bearing readings, pace counts, declination calcs, distance calcs, ...) to be solved at various points along the hike, the points being marked on the topographic maps (Penalty - Three minutes added to each team's final time for each wrong answer/response).

As mentioned in the posting above, we based it on the "Raider Challenge" events held by JROTC units, but replaced/switched events around a bit to make it more Ground Team oriented.  We would have liked to incorporate some RDF tasks, but we wanted to keep the event to a 1/2 day, and to have each team take a turn with the LPer would have pushed us beyond that.
