Your going to start out as a cadet, and as you progress you'll get more and more cadets under you.  However you may start doing things like administrative or starting to run your units training. I've been in the cadet program for nearly 4 years,  I currently run all Emergency Services/ Aerospace Education training in my unit. It really does depend on your local unit.

As far as shooting goes in my 4 years I have fired a rifle on two occasions.  Some units may do it more often, some units less often.  It all depends on your local unit.

There's actually no such job as 'medic,' due to insurance and practice act issues, CAP personnal cannot prefrom routine medical duties.

There's a whole bunch of different emergency services positionsand responsibilies, from Ground Team Member, Communications, Urban Directional Finding, Planning, Logistics, Mission Support, Flight Line work, etc etc etc.

Of course, emergency services are only part of CAP and the Cadet Program.

Juicedude10, I assume you are new to CAP, so welcome.

These questions are better answered by your local unit as participation in Emergency Services / Aerospace Education varies by area.

As a new cadet your focus will be on the Cadet Program curriculum, getting to an Encampment within your first year, and then starting to explore Emergency Services.

There is no comprehensive listing of duty positions a cadet can fill, it is left up to individual units.

You can take a look at CAPP 52-15 (http://capmembers.com/media/cms/P052_015_21F7ACED34F45.pdf), the Cadet Staff Handbook. There is a section in there that has position descriptions for all of the most common cadet staff positions.

Your "job" as a cadet is to progress through the program. As you progress in professional military education, you will become qualified to handle various leadership positions within the Squadron. These leadership positions start at the lowest echelon, or element, of your Squadron.

Cadets will often staff activities at the local level and beyond your Squadron. After your introductory training, you might work as a junior member of staff at any number of such activities. These things include formal training programs, Like Basic Cadet Schools, through public service activities, like working at an airshow or public parade.

A Cadet can participate in Emergency Services, and receive ratings and qualifications within that structure. Many Cadets routinely participate in actual Search and Rescue Missions, and you can too.

You can also affiliate with almost any job that the Squadron  has a Senior Member ( us old guys) to fill. You can "Job Shadow" these Officers to and learn about the Job, carrying the unofficial title of Cadet- (fill in job name here)

You can also create your own job! I see you are interested in shooting, and so you may want to find a sympathetic Senior Member and organize a shooting program. CAP has rules and regulations for how these kind of things are carried out, and you can find every single one of our rules, regulations, and policies online ( start with cap.gov and poke around) You will find complete job descriptions ( Sometimes called "tracks") for every Squadron Job there is described in CAP pamphlets, which are used by Senior Members in our training and rank progression, and might shed some light on who we are and what we do.

Good luck, have fun!

Hey, Thanks Major Lord,
This all helped alot.  I like to shoot, I also like to do leadership stuff, and like I want to parachute but how would i really try to start that stuff?

You are welcome! We don't parachute in CAP, even if our planes are on fire, its against the rules. I hope whoever recruited you did not leave you with an inaccurate view of CAP: No combat, no parachutes, and hardly any guns is the CAP way.

As Major Lord pointed out, there is plenty of "gung ho" stuff for cadets to learn & do in CAP. If you want to go parachuting, you'll have to sign up with a local private company or club that offers parachute or skydiving training (check the Yellow Pages). Another outfit, the American Cadet Alliance has participated in parachute training on a limited basis. See details here:

Some squadrons participate in a rifle program, while others don't. Our cadets go shooting about once a month, courtesy of a local range. It's a sweet deal that we work hard at not screwing up!

Just in case you missed DC's post above, I'd really recommend a read through the CAPP 52-15, Cadet Staff Handbook for a good idea of the most common positions cadets can and will fill at the squadron.  You can get a copy at: http://capmembers.com/media/cms/P052_015_21F7ACED34F45.pdf (http://capmembers.com/media/cms/P052_015_21F7ACED34F45.pdf)

The listing of the staff positions starts somewhere midway through the pamphlet (about page 40-something).  Each cadet staff position has a two-page summary of the duties, expectations, etc.

As a new cadet however, your first responsibility is to prepare yourself for those duties by learning the basics, progressing through your achievements as quickly and as well as possible (the higher you progress through the achievements and get promoted, the more likely you'll have opportunities to serve on cadet staff both at your squadron and at outside activities).

Good luck!

I shoot at targets, from 45 yds. away.
