Robert Merrill Dorning, 85 passed away Monday, April 22, 2024. He was born April 6, 1939 in Athens, Alabama. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joyce Dorning; daughters: Deborah Dorning and Susan Dorning. His parents, Robert A. Dorning and Bertha M. Dorning along with his sister Laurette Dorning Frisbee preceded him in death.

Robert attended Central Park Grammar School and Ensley High School and took several courses at UAB.

He was employed by Liberty National Life Insurance Company on August 12, 1957 and left in December of 1985. He then was self-employed from 1986 – 1988. He started work with the City of Birmingham as a PC Technician from February 1988 until his retirement in December of 2011.

While working at Liberty National he joined the Alabama National Guard in 1960 and was called to active duty to Dreux Airbase France from 1961 – 1962. He joined the Civil Air Patrol in 1974 and served in many positions including; Squadron Commander, Group Commander, Deputy Wing Commander and was appointed Wing Commander in 1981 – 1986. He was still a member of the Alabama Wing at his death. Robert received many awards and commendations during this period having served for 50 years.

He served as a Deacon and Treasurer for Belview church of Christ and Pine Lane church of Christ for many years until his death.
